Picked up a 16MB RAM card for $35 shipped and (i paid the extra $5 to go from 8 to 16) and an AAUI->RJ-45 Adapter for $10 shipped. I know people may think this is overpriced (and it is) but I want to get this up and running quickly. Right now, I got the money to spend on it. So it's not a problem. But in order to get it online, i need to have more RAM. 4MB is not an option to get online

Hey man it's cool.

I dropped a few bucks on my 5300 and some upgrades also.

It's what we do.

Yeah, I was expecting to get flamed, but since I got this beautiful machine, and want to put it to use, I had to use BIN auctions so I can get the stuff quickly. I plan to use the machine for email and lite-browsing. probably to the 68k MLA :p

It would make a GREAT forum poster!

If it has IRDA, i would have been able to get it online by sharing it through the IRDA port on my Lombard, but since it doesn't, I guess it's not an option :(

The fact that it doesn't have the card cage doesn't matter to me. Down the line, if possible, I will hunt down a color screen for it. I want color damnit!

Well... I might just hunt down a whole other machine for that :p

Anyone surfed the web @ 16 grays before?

People on here have surfed on 1-bit displays. My step-dad used to dial in to Motorola in the mid-90s on a Classic. I think I used it to hit a few sites, as well, though I only remember that it was excruciatingly slow.

As for me, I've used my 520 (7.6.1 w/36MB RAM) to get online. It wasn't as bad as you might think. It was actually relatively usable, and didn't look too horrible. Then again, I only loaded this page, Yahoo!, and Apple's main page. Homestarrunner.com would explode that thing (if it could comprehend Flash, that is), as would any graphics-intensive page.

I got the stuff!!!

I got done loading 7.6.1 off of CD (I had to hunt around for an apple CD drive [i ended up using an Apple DVD-RAM Drive] to get it up and running) I just need to do updates off of System 7 Today website. Especially since I need an update to AppleShare so I can transfer stuff from my MacBook to my PowerBook 520. And I didn't bring any CDs, and especially not the clunky DVD Drive :p

I also received a Farallon AAUI->RJ-45 Adapter so I can browse the web now :D :D :D

I will get done setting it up and be on later tonight with the machine and will do a post.

These are the specs of the machine:

PowerBook 520 w/ 16 Grays

250MB HDD (SCSI)

AAUI Ethernet with adapter for RJ-45

1.44MB Floppy

25MHz 68LC040 CPU

20MB RAM (4 onboard, + 16MB Card) And with RAM Doubler, it gives me 40MB

Disc Cache is @ 96K but I will be bumping that up soon to 256K

Dead Battery (corroded)

Stereo Speakers and Internal MIC

External Video Port (No adapter though)

Ports:

1x ADB, 1x Serial, 1x SCSI (HDI-30), Sound in/out, Video, Internal port for Modem (I don't have the module)

System is in PRISTINE cosmetic conditions. The screen is having some problems. I believe it's the video connector at the board causing the Screen contrast to change constantly (if I hold it at a certain angle, it stops doing it) I will get that fixed...

When I get some stuff around the house, I will get to work on getting it online. Expect the next post from me to be on the 520 :D

Coius, did you ever finish fixing up your 520? What happened to the post from your 520? :p

Next step: SCSI-IDE, IDE-CF, CF storage? More RAM? (Max it to 32MB total) :p

How well does RAM Doubler work for you performance-wise? Which version are you using?

Nah, right now I don't have any plans.

And I don' think I can use ram doubler. I have 8.1 on it now, and I don't think it's compatible.

I have the website running off of a RAM Disk and after all is setup, i got about 3.7MB left of RAM. It's plenty considering all it does is sit there and server web pages :p

Anyways, it runs great, I have the HDD spun down and it hasn't come on since I first started it up like a few weeks ago.

The color screen is REALLY nice, especially when I played Sim City 2000 on it. Really nice graphics and the active-matrix makes game playing/scrolling pretty smooth.

I had rebuilt it since the Floppy was in at an odd angle. I found out that it was put in wrong (by me) when I first got it and was cleaning it out at that time. I tore the ENTIRE thing down and rebuilt it from the ground up. Cleaned under the board even!

Did a swap on the screen, fixed some other issues, slammed on a copy of Mac OS 8.1 and loaded up the HTTP Software. So far so good :)

Nice. The Powerbook 500 series is a great bunch of notebooks. I was lucky enough to get a maxed out 540c with 36mb of RAM (the max). It gets online perfectly under System 7.6 (have not updated to 7.6.1 yet). I use a Focus brand AAUI adapter, and iCab 2.9.9.

I used to run Mac OS 8.1 on it. THAT was an exercise in patience; even with the 36mb of RAM.

Now I have to rebuild the batteries, and get it going, it will make a great portable machine.

I'm glad to see other 500 series fans on this forum. I have a 520, 520c, 540c, and a 540c with PPC processor upgrade. I just need a 540 and a 550 to complete the collection (I doubt I will ever get the 550...it's a ghost). I'm trying to get spare hard drives as they are hard to come by. I just bought a CF adapter to see how it runs. Another one of my dreams is to get the type 3 cage but that is also tough to find.

A guy on an old google groups list offered me the CPU card from a 550, the one with the full '040. I should have taken it. Maybe I should go back and see what happened with them.

Yeah.. I've a pile of spare 5xx parts to get rid of one of these days now that i've condensed down to finishing the refurb job of the 550 and using the 500 (ppc) for everything else....

If anyone might want to take the rest of the stuff odff my hands, I might be willing to actually inventory and test it all it sometime :p

Out of spare color lcds at the moment, but have a bunch of spare 33mhz boards for 520->540 upgrading
