SCSI2SD and spindown

Mmm, so. With the assistance of techfury90, I have managed to get spindown and sleep to work !  :)

To solve the issues, you must flash the bootloader to a special version that disables the startup delay.

Be warned! This COULD brick your SCSI2SD, if the process is interrupted somehow… e.g. cable disconnection, bad cable.

It is repairable, but it would require soldering wires to the EEPROM (not the easiest thing).

It's pretty easy, just connect the SCSI2SD to your computer, and open up the configuration application.

There should be an option in one of the menus to upgrade firmware, and one to upgrade the bootloader.

If you haven't updated to v4.7, do it now! Just download the file here and point that "firmware upgrade" option to the file.

Then, download this file, and point the "bootloader upgrade" option to the "nodelay" file.

Finally, after that's all completed successfully, load the device configuration, change the "Startup Delay (seconds)" to "0" (zero) and click "save to device".

The issues should now be gone!

Let me know how this works for you!

OK-- I updated my SCSI2SD and tried my PB540.  I tried Special->Sleep and also let the unit spin down the drive after 4 minutes.

This fix works for me.  Thanks to finkmac and techfury90.

Just got mine in... and it doesn't work. The configuration/update utility doesn't detect it at all, the LED doesn't light up, and component D3 gets REALLY hot.

Yeah, considering all I've done is plug in over USB so far.
I'm in an email chain with the creator dude now, he's not gonna have stock for another 3 weeks though :-/

Fixed it!
Just booted up my prepared 7.6.1 SDcard, running on battery like a champ. Sleep and wake work just fine.
Now to get it online!

I'm trying to get my microsd to mount on another mac.. I have the 4 in 1 pcmcia adapter which I have tried in my Powerbook G3 Wallstreet but it doesn't see it.. If I used the PCMCIA CF adapter that works... with a CF card.. mounts and no issues.. But I cannot mount a MicroSD.. perhaps it is my 4 in 1 pcmcia adapter.. I also tried it on an all in one adapter on a Macbook 2008 and I couldn't get it to mount on that but I wasn't sure on the compatibility with OSX... But I expected it to mount on the G3 Wallstreet since it's running classic OS.. Any ideas??? I'd like to mount it on a classic machine for easy transfer.. I do it with CF cards with no issue... I had to format it with HDT Primer in order to format the Micro SD.. And I did install 7.1 on it.

This is for my SCSI2SD adapter of course...

I'm using a USB adapter, but on a PC. That way it's presented as a modern USB Mass Storage device. OSX should have no trouble seeing it, but it won't mount unless there's a valid set of partitions and volumes on the card already. It should be viewable in Disk Utility at the very least under OSX.
Not sure the best route on the Wallstreet... if you're running 9.x, then you should be able to use a USB card reader on that (it has a USB port, right?) but it may need to be a card reader that's compatible with USB 1.1. Most *should* be, but some may not like it.
Check it in Disk Utility first though, see if you can create the HFV volume that way.

Alot of those "junk" USB multi-card readers arnt actually bit-for-bit mass storage compatible.

They actually emulate a drive by itself and expect the SD card to be formatted a filesystem it can understand.

Reviving a really old thread ... I recently got a SCSI2SD powerbook edition for my 500 series, and am having the same problem.

Unfortunately the fix @finkmac listed no longer appears to work ... the bootloader upgrade option no longer exists (?) in scsi2sd-util, and the linked file is gone from the codesrc website.

I updated to the latest firmware bundle and still have this issue.

Curious what others have done to get SCSI2SD working in a PowerBook 500?  @Charadis I believe you have done this (actually I think I bought your SCSI2SD powerbook edition via eBay ... I'm running it in a 550c)?

I am curious if the "nodisksleep" extension available here might help ... I'm not sure whose website this is or how I bookmarked it, though ... think I will try this later on, but still curious what the "correct" SCSI2SD config solution is:

... the NoDiskSleep app (it's an app, not an extension) does NOT fix this issue, so I would appreciate any advice.

The problem I'm having is periodic freezes after an idle period on my 550c, which I presume is due to the OS sleeping the HD ... which is a SCSI2SD PowerBook Edition.  Just like the OP.

Thank you for the instant response to a 3-year old thread @finkmac!  I am reaching out to codesrc.

Things I have tried that didn’t help:

  • Upgrading to the latest firmware bundle
  • Setting the “enable unit attention” checkbox in Scsi2sd-util and saving to the scsi2sd
  • Running NoDiskSleep

Michael at codesrc.com was extremely helpful got me sorted.  The correct fix remains, as you pointed out a few years back, to apply the "nodelay" bootloader, which is indeed no longer available or even supported via the latest scsi2sd-util (due to the risk of bricking your unit), but the binaries for which he kindly e-mailed to me (and older versions of scsi2sd-util remain available on his website ... I used 4.7.1 at http://www.codesrc.com/files/scsi2sd/v4.7.1/ ).

I suggested he may wish to make them publicly available again on a strictly "AT YOUR OWN RISK!!" basis for folks with PowerBooks, if he is so inclined.

I haven't logged in here for a while, but I see you're trying to get a SCSI2SD working in a 550c. Hope you were able to resolve any issues. And thanks for your purchase! I did get it working previously on a PB 520, there was a program that was provided to format the SD card and image the drive partition I think. I did very little testing and very little even with that module, given the image was a very small partition out of the 4GB SD card I used (I think it was only 512MB?).

Yes thanks!  I got it working following hte approach finkmac outlined above, with some help from codesrc who made the requisite “nodelay” bootloader available again for the purpose.  Works perfectly now.  I had never realized the PB 500s have no fan, all you hear is the HD noise, so they run completely silent with a SCSI2SD installed.  Having never opened one up until recently, I always just assumed there was a tiny fan in there ....
