I usually just solder in a socket?

If you get a normal (not turned pin) dip 14 socket, it's possible to push out all but the corner pins win a pair of pliers from the underside, then it fits the footprint. Most of my machines have sockets. Here is an example I added to a video card.

Yea, a socket would be a good idea but my intention was to keep this as original as possible. And I felt my desoldering skills are not good enough...
