Two Freecycle G3s and a G4

I just got word that I can pickup two G3 BW towers and a G4 tower tomorrow from a local Freecycle post. I'm told the two G3s may run and the G4 at least needs a new hard drive. They were posted as parts only so I'm hoping they can be made to work. Counting the iMac I just picked up this will be four Macs in less than a week which is a record for me. :)

I find that too plus you get more than a request, you get their life story and how much they need your box of random PC parts or empty/scratched AT case.

Anyone have a similar experience?

I picked them up today. They all work. The G3s are 400 and 450. The G4 is a 450 dual processor. The G3s have ram and hard drives. This should keep me busy for a while. They all have DVD drives and zips as well.

:p

Wow, two days before Leopard's release and you get a Mac that can run it, probably pretty well, for nothing...I can't even begin to describe how jealous I am...

Yep, it's the same here. Many people in this area are under the impression that anything electronic is valuable so they'll snatch up almost any computers pretty quick. Normally it is so they can sell them on the dodgy markets for a few quid. At least it's a good way of getting rid of things quickly without trashing them!

I still think it's funny when you get "Wanted: high spec laptop" or "Wanted: 20-inch or larger LCD" adverts on the local FreeCycle here! :D

The 450 DP is up and I am posting this using it. I found two 256mb dimms in the G3s and added two 128mb sticks for 768 total. I put in a 10gb 7200pm Deskstar drive in it that had Panther on it already. It booted right up. I also threw in another 20gb drive I had lying around. It looks practically new inside with very little dust. It even had the plastic pull offs on the front of the case covering up the CD door and zip. I'm told by the person I got it from that she got all three machines from a friend who is a Mac tech who was just going to throw them out.

Who tosses a dualie?!
I'm shocked too. It is really quick with Panther. I just got the G3 450 up and running. I am running OS 9 on that one. I threw in 256mb of ram as well as 40gb and 30 gb hard drives. Right now it is used as storage.

Who tosses a dually? A bonehead who doesn't know what he's got. :-/

Glad that you were able to salvage both the G3 and the dually G4. :)

I got the G3 400 up and running. Since I made out so well on this deal I think it will go back up on Freecycle along with my AIO G3 and another BW 400 I have. I'll definitely keep the G3 450 and G4 450 dual. My daughter now has the iMac 400 DV I aquired so her old iMac 333 will be used as a back up machine. That leaves the AIO out of service.

Kudos to you for putting your older machines back on Freecycle and sharing the wealth!

Thanks. I have been very lucky with Freecycle over the past couple of years. The AIO was picked up yesterday. I got it from a Freecycle post about two years ago. One of the BWs is promised already. Giving them away provides an opportunity to get rid of some other stuff I have lying around that would be worthless otherwise like smaller hard drives, ADB keyboards, cables, and smaller ram sticks.
