sound crashing

Any ideas what might cause a board to crash when it plays a sound?
Startup sound plays fine, system boots fine, apps run etc but if you go to control panel/sound and play an alter the machine crashes.
System 6.0.8. Board is a another Macintosh Portable I just re-capped and replaced hybrid power manager.
Also crashes when playing a game if it makes sound.

Check around the sony sound chips, I had a IIcx board with broken traces (well a repro with missing traces but it's the same thing) where changing the sound volume would make the board crash and then requite a PRAM reset before it would boot again. I suspect the broken traces where making the chips act funny and pull on the /RESET line . fixing the traces resolved the issue

The Icx and portable use the same version of the sony sound chip so it's possible you could be seeing the same effect

Might also be worth posting some pictures of the board

Ok yes there was some slight corrosion around the sound area while I was recapping and I scraped it clean and re solder masked it but maybe there’s a short over there. I’ll pull the caps and inspect. It’s just odd that the startup sound works and I also have the talking moose extension and he talks when the system finishes booting up but then any more sound and it’s all over. Sometimes he kills it too.

Well I pulled the 3 caps in the sound section c9 - c11 and checked the traces then coated them with solder mask but no luck. Board crashes without the caps too.

The issue seems intermittent. I can play the system sounds for a while after reboot but then after it sits it crashes when I play them.

Tried hot air and freeze spray on chips in the sound area.

Not quite understanding the schematics though so I don’t really know where to dive deeper.

Some photos of the sound section:
