That board still looks pretty darn good all things considered. You might even be able to get away with leaving the Hybrid alone once recapped.
No disk icon is probably due to that Conner HDD holding up the SCSI bus. They have the sticky bumper issue, and the rubber seals on them can also melt too.

I’d probably leave they hybrid. My feeling is if it works, great! (I’m also one of those weird “keep it original if you can” kind of people). You can always get the replacement in the future if you need.
You’re probably going to want to get one of those SCSI adapters they sell on eBay, then you can hook up a SCSI2SD or blueSCSI or whatever things. They work great. I actually have my portable with me at work overnight, so I’ll get a photo of it in mine for you.

Well, she turns on and tries to boot from floppy with hard drive unplugged. Doesnt make it too desktop, will go back to smiley face. So will order battery and scsi adapter for it. Screen is beautiful. I recapped all of it except the 470uf 25v which i didnt have. Will get those next

It has a battery, not sure how good it is?? Put a new 9 volt in as well. Was able to boot from Apple portable tour floppy.. thats fun lol

No original Portable battery is going to be any good now - they're lead acid. Are you using an original Portable charger?

That’s what I was leading up to…hopefully not another charger. If so, or an incredibly ancient battery, it just isn’t going to have the amps available to power the machine and that’s your issue. You can purchase the nice, molded ones off eBay for a reasonable price.
But…make sure you are using a compatible battery and original charger only.

Basically, don't use a PowerBook 100 series charger on it. It will work for a little while, until the MOSFETs can't take it anymore and blow out. The Portable defies normal logic on "more amps = ok".

Was using an amazon power adapter for that I bought for powerbook 100. Is that not good for portable? I have the original adapter, didnt even try that with it due to fear of age

Yes! That's very bad. Don't use it again, you'll blow something out eventually. It's probably fine right now if you've it only for a short time, but DON'T keep using it that way. The Portable MUST be powered by a 7.5v 1.5A original charger or exactly identical equivalent, with a functioning main battery installed. Any other way will lead to a dead power circuit sooner or later.
The original adapter may still be good, test the voltage output on it first though. I do believe it has a single ELNA brand cap in it though, and those do leak nearly 100% of the time, so it's best to recap it.

Ok, thanks for the heads up!! Will test the original one. Is it normal for the portable to chime even with just 9v batteries attached?

I'm not entirely sure. I think the Portable may be able to do something without a battery installed (on the original AC adapter), but it definitely won't start properly, I know that much. I do believe though that it's generally recommended to never run it at all without batteries, original AC adapter or not. Just bad for the power manager I believe.
The only way you can run one without a battery is if you hook up a bench power supply with the right specs to the battery pins, mimicking an original battery.

The Portable will do exactly zero with its original charger. Not a thing. You need the battery for sure. I have not as of yet recapped my power adapter....but I will get to it soon. Another suggestion is to get a lead-acid battery trickle charger/maintainer like you would for a car battery and use it for the Portable battery. I have kept my battery on the shelf for over a year at a time (who uses the Portable all the time?) and the battery is perfectly maintained.

Couldn’t you also just leave the portable plugged in all the time instead of using a battery tender? Assuming the charger’s been recapped at least.

Absolutely you can. My only issue is that I usually leave my Portable in its bag, and you can't plug in the adapter at the same time...too tight a fit. So, you would have to either put it on a shelf long ways, or leave it out on a table (takes up too much room for me).Me… if only I had one!

So, here’s my SCSI2SD mounted in the portable. I have the SCSI adapter to interface between the Portable’s proprietary SCSI interface and the SCSI2SD. I also mounted it on some plastic standoffs to keep it away from the metal shielding underneath.
