PB 150 at the local thrift...

Hey, my first post!

So, I was wandering about my local thrift, and in the "collectables" section I see what looks like an older mac laptop in pretty good condition. They want $55 for it, but the lady in the department tells me to make an offer. I hesitantly offer $30, and walk out with a PowerBook 150 in really nice shape. It had the original recovery floppy, NiCd battery (which seems to be really dead), power adapter, a nice Targus carry bag, and the little plastic thingy that covers the battery compartment.

I got it home, it rattled a bit and they keyboard seemed semi responsive. Opened it up (amazing how there was no dust at all in there...) and the screws that held the keyboard up were loose and all over. They went right back in, I tightened the other screws up, and low and behold, keyboard is just fine.

I've now got system 7.5.5, 7.5.3, and the original 7.1.1 on there. I've got it on the home network with a EtherWave that I picked up from Ebay. 7.1.1 likes it just fine (I've even got TCP/IP working right), but 7.5.5 is grumpy. I've only got 4mb of ram, so keeping it in 7.1.1 is probably best anyway.

I've also been doing a bit of a self-rescue. I bought an LC III (okay, Performa 450) in college eons ago, and I powered it up every once in a while to see that it still works. I just this week stuck a brand new Farallon Ethernet card in it, brought it upstairs, and now it's sitting on the network as well. It has 20mb of ram, 80mb HD, and an external zip.

You may have gotten another addict, er, I mean, member...

Love it, it's PERFECT! You're off to a great start there, just carry the effect up the case in the rest of the rainbow colors . . . I thought it was crayon . . .

. . . post-apocalyptic design language. :approve:

Another PB150 owner... but another with only 4MB.

wonder if there will be a 68kmla brawl over my PB150 memory upgrade adaptor now ;)

Yeah... I'd like the 32mb upgrade at some point, but it's like trying to find... well, something that's hard to find.

I wonder if the adapter could be replicated somehow...

MacAddict was awesome. They helped me get a refund from a reseller that stole $1500 from me. I bought a used computer from some company, they shipped it to me via UPS, it arrived soaking wet and wouldn't boot. So I called the company about getting a refund, they told me no. So I called UPS to get an insurance quote, and the cheapskates only insured it for $500. On top of that, UPS could only issue the refund to the seller (not the buyer.) So they took their $500 back, kept my tradein (which was 8600), and I was out $1500 and had nothing to show for it.

A few years later I saw them advertising in MacAddict. I wrote MacAddict a letter telling them they should check their advertisers because this company had screwed me out of $1500. I soon got a letter from said company's lawyer claiming they were going to sue me for libel (it's not libel if it's true!) So I forwarded the letter to MacAddict. Then a couple weeks later, I got a letter from MacAddict informing me that the other company had "spoken to their lawyers," and said I should contact them to get a refund. So I did, then I got my refund.

Best magazine company, EVER!

Yep, in fact here's the Grassroots, the MacAddict Forum threads that started it all. I miss MacAddict. Back when it was MacAddict and it was Freakin' Awesome! MacLife is Blech!

MacAddict pretty much was grass roots in of itself. They came out at a time when Apple was really struggling. Tough times, but a time when the Mac Faithful really stood out. Who remembers Power Computing's "Fight back for Mac" campaign?

I miss the old MacAddict. Remember the CDs with awesome music and fun videos?

Yep, I still have all mine. Still watch the staff videos on occasion. And I still think the best one by far, was "Its a Wonderful Mac" :D
