You could try a supercapacitor instead of the battery, the size is similar and I'm sure you can "modify" the board to charge it when the machine is on

You could use Applescript to record you opening and setting the control panels for mouse, etc, then drop the script and an alias of the Date & Time CP into Startup Items.

Wasnt there an extension that would save all PRAM data, and restore it on startup? Sure no TOD clock, but mouse settings and everything else would be good.

From what I understand, the battery delivers only a trickle when unplugged. If plugged in, the trickle is likely less. Keeping the mac plugged into the mains even if off for a few days shouldn't cause the battery to live short term.

I agree that removing the batter is best when the computer is disconnected from an outlet for several week/months
