IIci with a surprise inside!

I spotted a IIci on eBay for $70. No interior pictures of course. I shot a message to the seller and got one motherboard shot back, drive Cage in place so I couldn't see if there was battery damage, but there WAS something interesting-looking in the PDS slot! What the heck, I'll take a gamble. It just arrived today and I did a quick disassembly. It has a bit of battery leakage but it was stored on its side with the battery at the low point so it leaked onto the plastic mostly. Maybe a little RTC damage. Should be easily repaired. More importantly though is that card. It's a Sonnet 68040 accelerator! Neat! Time to pull the battery and start cleanup and repair.

Nice.  Looks like a Rev 4 Turbo 040.  Also looks like you averted disaster with that Maxell bomb.

Edit:  Maybe not a Daystar?  Still definitely a 68040 accelerator.

Edit 2:  Misread your post.  Sonnet 040.  Very nice!

Nice find! I think I know which one on you're referring to. Almost took the gamble myself. Glad it payed off for you!

And agreed, you got the best case scenario on that battery bomb having gone off!

Ah, nice gamble.  Congratulations.   That one was from Tacoma, yes?   I messaged the seller asking if there was any memory in the machine when he tested it, because the description said no video.   My thought was that if a memory bank was empty it might not produce video, but if memory was installed, then it was probably a battery bomb.    The answer I received was that all eight slots were filled, so I skipped it.

Brilliant find! Last year I lucked into a similar IIci and the same Sonnet Presto & PAS16. Here are the Sonnet drivers.

Awesome!  I bought a IIci last year with a Sonnet 040 in it as well, although I didn't do quite as good as you did-it cost me $200.  However, the IIci was running!
