Building an internal grayscale card for the SE/30

you can actually get OS 8 and 8.1 on the SE/30, but it's a very hacky process and requires that you have a system 7 boot disk to boot off, as well as 32-bit clean ROMs, or Mode32 as an extension
I have 8.1 on my SE/30. I used a 32bit clean rom, pretty sure one is required and that Mode32 won’t get the job done (unless there’s an alternative method).

Only need system 7 disks for initial install. Once set up though, it has worked great ever since. Nice to have HFS+ support.

Had a few hours spare to install mine today.

There was a minor hiccup with getting one part of the wiring harness the wrong way round, and I had to adjust the machine's brightness cut-off pot on the analog board, but otherwise it is working fine.

I’m very curious about the PDS cards you have in your SE/30 and how you have them arranged. I own a few cards and can identify a bunch fairly easily, but I don’t recognize any you have except for Bolle’s new grayscale card. It looks like you have at least one right-angle adapter perhaps. Would you mind sharing what you have and how you’ve configured them inside the case, please?

Ideally, I would love to replace my SE/30 board with an all-in-one Bolle board with 68040, grayscale, and ethernet included. Perhaps maybe even 72pin SIMM with the redesign? Even though I already maxed my SE/30 with 128MB of 30pin SIMMs.

Ideally, my SE/30 would make my coffee, toast and eggs, and teleport me to a nice sandy beach and make some cocktails for me. But it doesn't do those things.

In reality, there is a limit to what you can physically fit on that logicboard - hence why it has a PDS slot and hence why ugprades are on cards instead of all on one board. What has been achieved with SE/30 upgrades is incredible and far beyond what was originally meant for that computer.

I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve with these ideas? Putting everything on one board would increase complexity and cost a lot for no real benefit.

Cool factor, no doubt. 😎 Will be likely be done eventually, though 1400 redux in SE/30 form factor would be far better. An SE/30 form factor adapter along the lines of my BookEndz docking station for the OEM board would do. 😁

I just saw Action Retro's video about this... Is this card combo for sale? I would love to add it to my Mac!

Hum. What is your budget, I think I can make your SE/30 do these things. Does a long car drive to Skegness count as teleport?

I hope this is coming to VCF East for in-person drooling!
Update: just heard that it is coming to East... can't wait.
