1400 G3 Upgrade

Scored off of eBay a Sonnett Crescendo G3 upgrade for my 1400 project. 400mhz. $30 shipped. It's "unknown if it works" because the 1400 he was using it in stopped working. Fingers crossed! Next step 1400c screen replacement.

The CPU itself works, but the Sonnett Extension required to enable the L2 cache is freakishly unstable (and I do have the latest from Sonnett's site). When I get more RAM I'll do a clean install of 8.6 and go from there.

I'd use CPU Director to enable the cache, and see what happens when you downclock it, or disable it. At least you can do so!

Sonnett's own app "Metronome" shows when the Cache is enabled/disabled. It's enabled and presumably OK when Sonnett's extension is running, but I can only get all the way through the boot process about 10% of the time when that damn extension is enabled (I'm running 7.6.1). I'll try CPU director.

Unfortunately, I'm experiencing random freezeups and weird PMU issues (no boot, clicks, etc, though these might just be a dead PRAM battery) since I put in the G3.

Any advice on that?

I've got Sonnet's 466 version in Beater, my maxed out 1400c. IIRC, there was no extension necessary, I'm running 9.1 on the old WiFi Wanderer with no problems except except the weight & a measly 20-30 min battery life when the wind is JUST right. ::)

Hence, the HP Mini 1030NR with 2-3 hours of battery life! The whole shebang/bag, 2.3 lb, 10.1" LCD, NetBook, 5"x7" spiral notebook w/pen & pencil, MICROSCOPIC Belkin Mouse, Mousepad, my reading glasses-N-case and several letter size pages of to-do lists doesn't even hit 4 lbs on my diet scale!

That's less than the weight of my favorite PowerBook Duo 2300c all on it's ownsome. 8-o

The Night Stalker/WiFi Vagabond is running an XP NetBook! :I

Look at the Archive. He used to be a member, but it appears he forgot about the MLA. I think his username in the Archive was Trash80toG-4

Heh! You betcha! In a previous incarnation I was known as Trash80toG-4 here & on 'fritter.

I was then a mod on several of the forums here. ;)

I wonder if they'll reinstate my access to the war room? :?:

I NEVER forgot you folks, I just didn't have ready access to the web and no handy source for a good 1400 battery. ::)

Sorry to hear.

Why does : | (except without spaces) generate a weird blushing face? For me, : | was always an expression of neither sad or happy, more like "meh".

Thats what iChat for Leopard does. It's fun to have overexcited happiness and then end it in the "meh" face.

The PB1400 is NuBus architecture, despite the lack of (conventional) physical NuBus slots, not PCI. NewerTech's G3 accelerators reveal this in the names of their Extension and Control panel: NUpowr. The latest Crescendo extension from Sonnet will inevitably be for PCI Macs, so I suspect that you will need to hunt down and install an earlier Sonnet Crescendo extension. I cannot tell you its version number because all of my Macs (but a DA and an MDD) are still packed after a recent removal to another house. Nonetheless, good hunting.
