Quadra 650 with OS 7.1 won't mount cds

I just recently picked up a quadra 650 that didn't have a CD-ROM drive and installed an official apple 12x CD-ROM. I can't seem to get 7.1 to see discs on insertion, however when I reboot the system it will see the discs and show me them on the desktop like normal. Any ideas as to how to fix this or what might be causing it? Thanks!

You could try if installing the 7.6 CD-ROM extension helps.

The version from a standard 7.1 install might not work correctly with the newer 12x drive.
