Tiger doesn't jump into Windows

Not sure if this is the right forum area, but....

I have 10.4.11 set up on a Powerbook G4 and am connecting to a mixed SMB network (Windows, Linux, Mac...)

The Powerbook shows up in network directories on other computers and can be accessed by others. However, the SMB workgroup does not show up in the Tiger network browser. If I attempt a direct "Connect to Server" and nominate a known available share at a known IP address, I get a security dialogue but the password is always rejected.

Am I missing a trick here?? I know I have connected other Tiger installations without a problem like this.

I was having a problem like this going from 10.4.11 to a win7 x64 share. The problem I had was there was a user account (on the windows box) without a password. I know it sounds dumb but check anyway.

Hmmm - yes, dumb as in "non-standard". The general SMB standard is that the server offering the share determines whether a password is required or not. Seems Tiger, uniquely, doesn't recognize a null password. I wonder if that was certain developers being hyper-cautious about security, or just a bug? Doesn't seem to be the case with later OSX.
