This 6100 is insanity.

Well, it works fine without its sonnet upgrade. With the sonnet it crashes randomly, a total lockup. Then sometimes when I reset Mac OS Wont boot, other times it will. I have a bad PRAM Bat, however I suspect it is more related to heat, as the 601 gets hot fast, and I have a AV HPV card. However it sometimes crashes within 5 minutes, other times an hour.

Run it for a few hours without all the trinkets. I have to start my 6100 with a double hit on the power button as it has a dead battery.

By that I mean really prove the 6100 is good, then you know the problem is with the additions.

More details about how you diagnose and solve these problems would be good, for the record. Then others who arrive here via search can follow your steps.

Doh, I should have remembered that 6100s (and 610s etc) have dodgy power supplies. Installing a G3 card will only make it worse.

Check whether the fan is running freely. If it is rough, find a replacement. Install it using the existing wiring scheme which incorporates a thermistor that shuts down the psu when it gets hot -- that is what is causing your lockups.

Make sure that your 6100 has clean airflow underneath the case and to the rear. If necessary, put a couple of blocks of wood underneath the 6100 to provide a wider air gap.

I have tested my 6100 several times with a G3 upgrade, an older Radius graphics card and the 486 Intel CPU card and I also noticed these differences about the temperature inside the housing - but to me it wasn't the reason for a locking up Mac.

In the beginning I've been using the original Quantum hard disk but especially when using this disk along with the G3 upgrade the 6100 showed these lock ups. This didn't happen with the Radius or the 486 card.

So I exchanged the original Quantum drive with an IBM Deskstar (in fact I never trusted the old Quantum drives). The lock ups didn't reappear.

So it -> might <- be worth a try in my oppinion as later hard disks usually don't have that higher power consumption as the older ones.

What OS are you running? Some versions of 7 are bugalicious.

And what have you tried, and what worked?

my 6100 had heat issues as well. the thermal paste had completely dried out. some cleaning and arctic silver made it worky again ;)
