Ah, got it, read it.  I see that the manual clearly states the socket in the SE/30 is a little different from in other models.

I think I may experiment with replacing the ROM socket with a new one.
Yes i read that too but only after buying it and unsuccessfully installing it, taking the simm to my sisters this weekend to add solder to the contacts to help it fit better.

I've tried everything from the paper clip "spring," to the rubber band, to a trimmed-down plastic card/shim and the fit still leaves something to be desired... sometimes mine doesn't chime at all or, if it does (after a whack to the right side), it's not stable until I pop the case, take out the board and give the ROM a tune-up, fit-wise. I don't blame Doug for the design at all - it's got to be a tough supply chain and next to impossible to capture like .76 mm (the difference between .50" and .47" as you noted above) like 25+ years later.

Thanks Pb, i might try to make a plastic shim as well as solder the pins. Why would apple make it different only on the se/30 thats so annoying

Sorry I haven't been in in awhile. Looks like you got yourself quite sorted SE30_Neal? Did soldering the pins work? I haven't had the chance yet. I've been too busy/lazy. I just leave my case lid open and press on the ROM-inator manually if it doesn't work! The rubber bands I had in place stopped working :(

I know it's been awhile for any follow up comments in this thread, however I recently had the same issue with my ROMinator not being snug in the SE/30 ROM socket.

Check out this thread, specifically this comment for some nifty 3d printed holders which is the solution I went with and works great without the worry of rubber bands breaking at some point, like during a record setting game of Crystal Quest :)

As a side note, you can also use small binder clips, which I did prior to the 3d printed clips. If you go this route, be sure to put some electrical tape on the metal part of the binder clips to avoid any possible short from the metal clip touching something it shouldn't.
