I have just bought a Quadra 950 of ebay and its working ok only problem it has no cdrom drive and I want to install AU/X 3.0 on it I know I should look around for a apple cdrom drive but there are lots of other scsi cdroms on ebay

anybody got any recommendations as to what would work in the Quadra 950

bearing in mind I have heard that AU/X is a bit fussy about cdrom drives.

My Apple CD 300 has provided years of good service. I used it to install A/UX onto a Q700.

I've even used it on SGIs, an RS6000, an HP9000 and SUNs.

Yep, the Apple CD 300 is one of those devices that just keeps on working and working and working and working.... The plus ones use a tray... for others you'll need to track down some caddies.

Almost any SCSI CD-ROM will work in your Quadra 950. Even SCSI CD burners should work but I doubt you'll be actually able to burn CDs.

Non-Apple CD-ROMs will require a different driver than normal, but there are a couple of them that work with almost ALL drives. I have installed A/UX with a non-Apple external SCSI CD-ROM on a Quadra 700. I had to install a different CD driver on the A/UX boot disk first, then it worked fine.

You would think so, wouldn't you? However, those Quadras were built to last. I used to burn CDs in an old Quadra 610... the key was lots of RAM and giving Toast at LEAST 16 megs of cache... especially if other things were going that could require CPU cycles (file sharing, printer sharing, etc.).

I plan to install a burner in my 950 just as soon as I get some free time and find my old copy of Toast. Now if only A/UX had support for burning CDs...
