Portable screen failure

I have here a Mac Portable that has been through a lot, but for a while I had it working perfectly. Then, for no reason out of the blue, every other scanline on the bottom third of the screen is gone. I've tried rebuilding the cable, but that hasn't cured it (I had to use the original connectors since finding new ones is of course impossible). I may try taking the LCD completely apart, but I have the distinct feeling that that could make things much worse.

Has anyone else seen this problem, and is there any sort of solution short of attempting to source a screen from another Portable?

I have no fix, but I can assure you missing lines are not going to be fixable by ripping apart the fragile lcd structure, though its easy to accomplish, once your into your 3rd or fourth layer and you notice the "connection" is a flex pcb with chips connected to etched glass you know even IF that was the problem ....

look elsewhere, failed or failing (super tiny) smd caps, voltage issues, ground?
