Lost my Icons

Hi guys

I have a slight problem and i was wondering if anyone else has suffered this. I bought a Classic off ebay earlier this year, it seemed perfectly fine. Tho sometimes the icon for the floppy would take ages to appear after inserting a disk.

Now today, I have turned the Classic on and discovered all the icons inside the hard drive have vanished. If i load up office, I can navigate the drive and folders if i go to open a document. But they do not show on the via the desktop interface.

I have disabled extensions and performed a rebuild, but it has not fixed the problem. If i do a "find" and say type in "Documents", it will find and open my "Documents" folder and the icon will appear along side the System folder.

I'm beginning to think it might be wise to format the drive and make a fresh install, there's not much on the drive other then a few applications Aldus Pagemaker, Claris. Which while I would like to keep for nostalgic reasons, they are not licensed to me.

Do a virex scan too. I do remember there was a virus or two that did this. Surprisingly enough for shits and giggles, with all the macs I have hauled home over the years at various states of dis-repair. I did do scans, and ended up with 3 different viruses between machines. its kinda funny. one of them was cdef virus, and another was NDIF i think. I cant remmeber the 3rd one.

I remember reading of one guy who infected all his applications by mistake when trying out a "new" (i.e. beat-up) II-series machine.

I've also heard that vanishing icons can be an early sign of disk failure.

Disinfectant is a good one. It's still somewhat up-to-date. Then again, the era of active Classic Mac OS virii has been over for at least 2-3 years. Whatever's there is old code that has been lurking on a floppy or hard drive for years. Once contracted nVIR A after purchasing a copy of Super Tetris. Spent the xmas weekend during 1993 cleaning every single floppy I had for my Mac Plus with SAM 3.5.8...

Is Virex or Disinfectant the best antivirus for System 7.1.X? What versions are suggested?

I have a few missing icons as well, rebuilding desktop and Disk First Aid both failed to restore them. I want to make sure I didn't get something on my PB 540c.

I scanned with Disinfectant and Agax, both came back negative. Guess those extensions are just retarded.

From what I can tell. Virex 6 requires 7.5.5 or above, so that won't work with 7.1.x, and apparently Virex 5.x sucks.

Which extensions are they? I do know that the Mac GUI City typically has most, if not all extensions and control panels online.

Thread manager 2.1, Appleshare 3.7.2, I don't remember the rest off the top of my head.

Since they work, just the icons are stupid, it's not worth downloading new copies.

Which of those will be ok for System 6?

I decided to use that instead of 7, simply due to the performance. After all the Classic is essentially a Macintosh Plus.

Cheers, I shall look around to see if i can find a copy.

I've not really had the issue of virus's with my Plus as i run everything from floppy, after I got sick of using the HDD. The Plus steals soo much room when you use HDD, external floppies etc.

I'm still trying to decide if System 6 is best for the Classic or go for 7. The Classic is after all a Plus with an internal HD, so the processor might lag with System 7 installed.

I'm mainly using the machine for writing.

My last Plus seemed ok with 7.1, as did my old SE. But, 6.0.8 is more appropriate for a 68000 machine, in my experience.
