Hey Guys

I'm geting a I-book G3,

the owner told me it's screen goes black and they have to restart the computer to get the screen to work. I plan to use this G3 for school work as its a simpal computer,

Nothing very big but note taking and some light web surfing, (not much flash and what not)

How would i fix this computer

What system should I run?

What should I use?

Office "98 (or somthing, like that)

Office 2001

Office 2004

Office 2008

I-work 06

I-Work 08

Apple Works 5

Apple Works 6

I own all of them programs, but I need to be compatible with the windows world, as well as 8-9 10.0-10.6.0

Thanks so MUCH!

The best version of OSX for the clamshell is 10.3.9 for speed and overall usability. If you want newer versions of software (like Safari 4) then you'll need to run 10.4 on it. I don't know about the 466MHz models (they may actually be just fine), but my 366MHz indigo is REALLLY slow under 10.4 with 576MB of RAM installed. If you've got less than 320MB of RAM, then I would not recommend running OSX at all. For the other software you mention.

Microsoft Office 2001 is awesome and uses hardly any CPU or RAM compared to the OSX versions.

AppleWorks 6.1

iWork 06 (only if you're running X obviously)

Yea ok I think I may upgrade the hard drive as-well as the ram and if it does not have an air port card I will get one and install it, Does 10.3 have annoying dash bored? I just never liked it and found it a waist of mem in the system.

I am hoping it has fire wire as I do still use it, I have a few drives and there is the emac lab in my school I can use target disk mode with, and use my system, (I can boot to other system with holding option at start up)

What is the max for the hdd and aswell ram? and would it be worth to get the batt rebulit?

ALSO,

Does it have that 7.5 GB limit with the OS?

I run Tiger on a 466 and it's perfectly serviceable.

Ok, does any one know about this "black screen" problem? or could it just be the sofware? I do know on the g4 Ibooks this problem was dew to the gpu,

also how hard is it to open the computer up to add the ram and new hard drive? and if it has a cd-rom drive should i get a dvd rom drive, ? this is my plan for it

DVD rom drive (Unless it has it)

80GB hard drive (IDE of course)

Max out the ram (I need the limit)

Air Port card

Rebuilt Battery, (so I can have extra long life (Hoping for 9HR)

is there anything I should look at geting aswell, are there apple kits to open the computer up? as I will need that

thanks

Just make sure you have the screen problem diagnosed before spending any money on other upgrades. It would suck to buy the RAM (512mb sticks are NOT cheap) and all that other stuff only to discover the logicboard is fried. Also, the hard drives in Clamshell's are very difficult to access. You have to do a lot of dismantling in order to get it out, and there are lots of plastics that can get broken in the process. I got about halfway into that project, and gave up. If it doesn't have a DVD drive installed, I don't know if you'll be able to install one and watch movies on it. I think Apple only installed the decoder chip on models that came with the DVD-ROM drive from the factory. Maybe someone else here can verify this?

well most of my movies are just burned dvd's so it wont not need the decoder, and i think its on the dvd drive, if im not mistaken,

I have herd of put squares of a disk under the gpu if that is the problem or taking a heat guy to the gpu on low to make the sotter well resotter,

also funny question does any one know if they make a 2.5 ssd thats ide?

as that would just save tones of life on the computer if its still good

You are mistaken, I'm afraid :-/

The DVD decoder chip is not for copy protection. It is necessary to watch any MPEG-2 (DVD) content (at least in OS 9*), even from burnt disks or if you have copied it to your hard drive. It is not in the DVD drive; it is soldered to the motherboard.

*On the other hand, I have heard that software DVD playback is possible in OS X, using only the CPU.

Have you found out the CPU speed yet?

there was only one indigo version with fire wire it's the 366MH verson I think, but I am not looking to play dvd movies on the computer, I might once in a while but not often. as I may have my mac book where I am most of the time aswell,

I am looking to making it a fire wire burner (if I can put a dvd burner in it) as-well a portable hard drive, as well as my 10.4 and 9 Install. As well I am planing for this computer for my school work like i said in an older post, as well as just some data backing up (mainly my music) :p

English

Well then it is the 466 version then as she told me something about target disk mode, she did not know what it was as when she got her mac book the guy that moved the data over used it
