Sometime you can have nice surprises in life…

Bought two  non-workings PowerBooks 17 A1139 sometime ago, one was a total wreck like coming out of a trashcan, battered case, broken screen, missing keys… but complete interior, very dirty though… and another one in mint exterior condition, but dead main board.
Bought it with the intention of using these as spare part stock. So they stayed in the closet for a while… until the other day when I tried doing one working with these two.
Dismantled the nice one, was surprised to find the HD still there (a 100 Gb) together with two 1Gb ram cards… but mainboard indeed dead.
Then dismantled the battered one to take the mainboard, never seen such a dirty thing, cleaned it and placed it in the nice one, thinking it would be too good if that board would work…

This after a bit of cleaning, it was much much more dirty.
But then , after two PMU resets , bong, it booted on the HD, Tiger installed :)

Now formatted, and Leo installed.

I think i wants to know how much you paid for the two units in the first place.

Congrats, i agree the casing looks brand new.

Ah ok then :) Thanks Louis.

I got the two Powerbooks 17 for 20 € each. Didn't ask any refunds for these as they were sold as non-working, I knew that, bought for spare parts.

The refund was for that earlier PowerBook 3400c/240, first paid 50 € for it (not cheap, but was looking for one 240 for a long time), was sold as all good working condition, but arrived with a failed screen. So I asked a refund of 20 €. With a replacement screen it works fine, plus it had a 128 Ram card, so all in all a good deal...

And... 3 more :

2016-06-23 19.57.01.jpg

For 22 €. Two Pismos 400, and a PDQ 266... Mmmh , no remorse yet :)

Sold as non working, without ram and HDs. Turned out the Pismos boots after unplugging the PRAM battery (no chime though) , and the PDQ boots too ( with a tired screen though...). All have RAM, One even has a 256. No HDs it's true. All in good shape, but dirty.

Also came with a LaCie Zip drive for Pismo which I didn't had, two floppy drives for PDQ, a cd drive and floppy drive for 3400c (?).

Now , what am I gonna do with these .... ?

Looking for a OS I didn't tried on these. So far tested MacOS , Rhapsody (on PDQs), Debian. Maybe should try a BSD.

-"And what do you do during holidays ?"

-"Well , I buy old laptops..."

So I found a Kanga, to replace the mine having sound chip problem.

For 20 € , + 8 € for transport. Sold as "have no power block , can't test the unit".

The thing is very dirty. Here picts before disassembly/cleaning :

But it boots (so far...) !! Mac OS 9.1 on a very noisy hd (with strange things in it...).

Oh ... and yes, I removed the PRAM battery :)

Cheers

Congrats, what did you say to me about "reducing your collection" ?  :)
Yeah sure, I'll have stuff to give you :D

No no young man, though the machine is dirty indeed, nothing dirty inside ;)

The machine must have been in use by photographs of Sygma press agency. The system is not customized, not personalized, no name. Though very messy, you know like "this stuff is not mine, don't care ...". Only added apps are Photoshop 6.0 and a Fetch, registered to Sygma.

The "strange" thing is a folder on desktop full of pictures of former presidents Chirac and Mubarak in front of the Elysée :D

That IS strange. Maybe the former user needed the photos for a project. Maybe they TOOK the photos (interesting). Maybe they were just nationalists. =P

I think the pictures were taken during an official visit of Mubarak in France, during last Chirac presidency...

Pictures look like a press conf by the two pres in the Elysée courtyard, with picts of official cars too. Hires. Checked again , there is a Nikon import extension on the mac. So it must have been in use by a Sygma press agency photographer for that event.

A couple of years ago i collected a Dell desktop near a trash can, the PSU was shot, but the PC was ok and quickly used as our everyday computer (was my first experience to XP by the way)

The hard drive had a folder with pictures from a well known french TV show presenter, most of them were taken during holidays, and some came from his childhood, no obvious evidence was found elsewhere to link the computer to this presenter... at some point i kept a record of the file, just for fun.

Thanks to bibilit, generous donator of all the internal parts  (Mainboard, inverter, screen, and keyboard) , I was able to resurrect a completely deceased PowerBook 150 :)

Also got this with these parts :

Not tested yet . But should work, need a bit of cleaning.

Thank you Sir ;)

Any plastics repair work needed on the 150 (or preventative maintenance?)

Nope, was in pretty good shape, only the top lid Apple logo missing , but i replaced it.

The mainboard was toast (literaly, some burned components), the screen (tested on another 150) displayed larges black rectangles , unusable. I had that dead 150 for years in the closet...

Hey,

Nice to see you get it working in the end, the perfect timing for those two Powerbooks, mine was a wreck with the goods parts, yours was in good looking condition with bad components.

you get the hard drive working in the end ?
