Fimbulvetr's finds

I picked up an SE/30 with keyboard and mouse off kijiji today. The seller was a young guy, and wanted CAN$140 for the thing. The ad said it was upgraded with a 2GB and worked great. I noticed it had an Ethernet card and looked clean and in nice shape, so I decided to check it out. The guy said it was a gift and he had no use for it. After giving it a test run I bought it, and of course the first thing I did when I got home was open it up to check the condition and look for a maxwell bomb that might need diffusing. Not only did I find that it was beautiful and clean inside, it had been recapped (with original style SMD electrolytics), had a new battery, an Asante MacCon Ethernet card, 2TB 50-pin HD, and ... a Daystar Digital 50 MHz 68030 powercache!

Somebody must have really liked that guy to give him such a nice SE/30 as a gift.

It's missing the top sled for the HD though... the HD was just sitting there loose, on top of a piece of plastic. Good thing it never got bumped over as it probably would have taken out the tube...

That's one nice gift!

I'm glad that it found its way to someone that appreciates what it is, as well as the effort behind re-capping with original-style electrolytics. Definitely a long-term, kind of a commitment to re-cap it again 20 years from now when they start to fail again ;)

Oh, for crying out loud. It was working fine, but now that I've put it back together I am getting chimes of death and horizontal stripes.

I got one of those powercache thingies. SUPER DUPER FAST.

With this add on, the SE/30 is the fastest 030 Mac, even faster than the IIfx!

Stick a 32 bit clean rom in this puppy and it will really rock!

Phew. Just badly seated ram. One clip is broken on one ram stick.
Glad to hear it wasn't worse.

I think I saw 30 pin SIMM sockets on Digikey recently..... Or was it somewhere else...

Thats If, you wanted to find someone to do a reflow.

Movements & vibrations might shake it loose again.

Yeah, I'm going to have to find a long term solution to that broken clip someday. I'm not afraid of soldering, but my equipment and skills are probably not up to replacing it.

I'm sure you're like me, and, one day......

But, yeah, ya need good reflow skills, good magnifier (unless your eyes are more than excellent), air reflow, good flux, good wick, and good solder.

My "cheap" magnifier is $200..

Flux $33

Wick $20

Reflow $120

But it's worth it when you fix something on a bet, and win!  HA!!

PS Use an old Microsoft to train on. They're plentiful and they're everywhere.
