Carrera SE30 control and Bolle Carrera040 in the Mac SE/30

Hi everybody,

I have had the fantastic @Bolle set of slot expander + ethernet bracket + Carrera 040 clone in my SE30 for a while and everything was perfect.

I had to reinstall System and I wasn't able to find the old Carrera SE30 control - and if I use the newer one (v.1.8) it hangs at boot on system 7.5.3 and doesn't load on 7.01 and 7.1.1 . If I boot with extensions off (pressing shift) everything is ok but obviously the card will not be active. I am only using the control panel, as I remember I should not install the Carrera Startup extension on the SE/30.

I found a note on Gamba site that the System and System Update 7.5 documents needed to be patched with ResEdit to make the Carrera040 work on the SE/30 (done) and that I had to install 7.5 "for every Mac" (done) but... no luck anyway. What am I doing wrong? or where could I find the previous version of the control (the one which broke the sound output) to give it a try again?

Oh damnit, forgot to answer your PM you sent a few days ago. That's what you get for reading PMs on your phone... as soon as it's not shown as "unread" anymore it's basically gone.

The unpatched control panels don't work at all in the SE/30 as you can see. There has been a new patched one that also fixes the audio issues on the SE/30.

I don't think any of this applies to the SE/30 and the Carrera. Before my adpaters it wasn't possible to use the Carrera in the SE/30 at all.
I'd suggest you remove those patches again. They're not going to be needed with the CarreraSE control panel and inits.

Thanks I am doing it tonight!

EDIT:

I forgot to mention, this was done to install a ROMSimm allowing me to use the 8MB of RAM installed in this SE/30 - so maybe this is causing some trouble? Now that I recall correctly, the patch was maybe needed to help the ROMSimm get along with the Carrera040... but I am trying to unpatch System 7.5 anyway.

BTW: if I run (unpatched) System 7.11 or 7.01 with the simple control panel, it doesnt get loaded at boot anyway.
I can open the control panel item and change the setting anyway, but if I set it up for icon in the menu bar, it will not show up. I think this is not affecting anything in the Mac in fact.

with (patched) 7.5.3 the control seems to load (icon shows up at boot) but it hangs there and freezes the machine.

If I add the Carrera Startup extension, it always hangs at boot with System Error (bus error) asking to reboot with Extensions disabled.

I don't think your IIsi-based ROM would be causing issues.

Have you turned on 32-bit addressing in the Memory control panel? The Carrera040 extension will not work in 24-bit mode.

IIsi ROM SIMM will be fine as long as you've made the appropriate changes to the System file.

Both Startup Carrera and the control panel are required for the patched version. Control panel does nothing by itself. Here's a little more on how the startup process works...

When the extension loads, it starts the 040, then sets whichever mode you have selected in the control panel (including switching back to the 030 if selected). If you get an bus error the second the extension loads and you're in 32 bit mode, etc, that points towards an issue bringing up the 040, possibly a hardware problem.

I suggest loading no other extensions but startup carrera and the control panel for troubleshooting purposes. I've always used 7.5 with my carrera, but I think 7.1 could work.

Here we go with some updates with MacOS 7.5.3:

having both the extension and control panel kind of does the trick regarding the freeze at load, meaning that everything is loaded at boot... IF the control panel is set to OFF - but then, even if I turn it on after, it doesnt seem to me that the Carrera kicks in - and no 040 CPU is recognized by Tattletech or Speedometer. Maybe some hint about how to be sure that it is or isn't working?

Strangely instead when the (turned off) Carrera control gets loaded, the following icon overlaps it.

Booting the Mac with any other setting in the control panel hangs the Mac after loading the Carrera control.
If I go and turn off everything with Extension Manager, except the Carrera extension, I am not seeing the control panel in the list... is it even possible? Anyway if I load it alone after turning it off, then I get no error... but no acceleration either. If it loads with the switch turned on, even if alone it hangs the system.

Seems if it was all working before and the only thing you did was reinstall Mac OS then it must be a software problem.

Control panel and extension are both mandatory. Control panel will do nothing without the extension, it will open but changing settings will do nothing and you get no acceleration. Control panel will not show in the extension manager list.

With both extension and control panel, what does the carrera icon at the loading screen look like?

Also, If you see the F/S/whatever icon in the top right of the finder menu bar, that also indicates it's loaded and working (unless you disable the icon).

Hi and thanks again for all the support.

The icon at loading seems ok (not crossed over) but as I wrote, the next one appears just over it.

After the reinstall I never made it to have the control icon showing in the menu bar.

I am wondering if maybe something happened with the resource fork of the control, as I really cannot figure out a reason for all this… but the hqx file was unstuffed with no problem.

So one month and so many attempts later, it really seems to be a ROMsimm compatibility issue... I tried two and both gave the same results, while original rom worked through the boot until the desktop with the control installed - at least on 7.01. With 7.5.3 I am still getting bus errors so I will have to reinstall it once again and re-try.

aaaand it works! This was the perfect achievement for this last day of #Marchintosh 2024!
Totally zapped the SD card, went for a fresh install of 7.1 (thanks @Bolle for the hint), then first tried with the standard rom and Mode32 extension: everything worked (including ethernet which got me on the internet! wow!).

now today I switched off the control, installed the RomSIMM, booted: everything ok. So I switched it back on, booted again and... here we go! RomSIMM, 32megs, Carrera040 control loaded, ethernet working!!! Nice achievement for Easter!
