Cannot get MacIP to boot on RPI

Hi all,

I got an Orange Pi Zero 3 1GB from aliexpress to run MacIP and play a bit with localtalk to ethernet to IP bridging.

Unfortunately, neither the Raspberry Pi image nor the Orange Pi image boots correctly. The RPI image does cause a flasinh blue light but it never attempts to get an IP address or send any data. The OrangePI image does not even create the flashing green led on the board.

Any tips to easily fix this before I start cutting some serial cables to create a console on the OrangePI (or order a mini-HDMI adapter)?

Thx!

It would help to have a bit more context here.

What exactly are these images and where did you get them from? How are you connecting the device to the network? What are you expecting should happen when you turn it on?

The obvious question is to what extent the knockoff is fully compatible with software made for the RPi. You might have better luck installing an OS from scratch.

Finally managed to get serial working with a TTL adapter. The OrangePI should try to boot the SD drive with the MacIP software but it does not look like it really tries to.

Will try a stock OrangePI Linux image first to get that working…

My guess is that the OP is referring to this:
https://www.macip.net/macippi/

This image was developed specifically for the OrangePi Zero One, I am guessing the issue that the OP is trying this on the OrangePi Zero 3, and that is the issue.

I have this setup running on a OrangePi Zero One and it works fine. Note while the Orange Pi units are Raspberry Pi compatible'ish, they don't run normal Rpi builds.

Correct! I do have the serial console sort of working but this OrangePI Zero 3 is giving me headaches. A Pi is much easier to work with for some reason. But, will get it sorted and post how when I do :)

I can get the OrangePi to boot using a stock factory image on flash meaning the hardware is fine, console/serial access works, etc. However, as soon as I use the OrangePi Zero One image from MacIP and try to boot it, it just hangs itself. In hindsight I should have researched more as these OrangePi things are incompatible little buggers and gotten a RPi for €15 more.

Ah well, will swap with an RPi3 that I use for something else and see how that goes.

OK, final update. Ordered a RPI4, flashed the card, booted. Everything working just fine in less than 5 minutes.
