Anybody know where to find System 7.5.4

So, I am restoring a Macintosh IIci https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/25123-macintosh-iici-wont-start-up/, and I thought it might be nice to run System 7.5.4 on it. Why 7.5.4? Look http://www.fenestrated.net/~macman/SysReview/#Summary at this. 7.5.4 crashes some PowerPC Performas. I don't even have any PowerPC Performas. (I was also planning to do http://www.fenestrated.net/~macman/755/.)

Does anybody know where to find System 7.5.4 (preferably as an updater to 7.5.3)?

Now I'm really curious.  I've emailed a few sources outside this site.  I also think two members (at least) may have copies - based on postings they made years ago outside this site.  I'll let you know what I come up with.

What was the release date? there is a good chance it is on one of the dev cd's from around that time (I have quite a few of those)

Max it wasn't on your server (I actually found you through your server before joining 68kmla - thank you for it, seriously.  Still working on getting Copland to boot - down the line).

7.5.4 was probably released between September 1st and 18th, 1996.

I was thinking it might have been on one of the Developer CD's on my server, but I cheacked through the ones from around that time and didn't find it. ( I do have some 7.5.4 Beta's on my server though :) )

If anyone post's a link i would love to add it to my server :)

Just to sound a note of caution, posting links to these sorts of things is a touchy business around here (unless it's 100% free and legal to redistribute).

Probably best to share the link via PM or email.

And why 7.5.4? What's wrong with 7.5.5, which is freely available?? They should both be identical on 68k, shouldn't they???

7.5.4 was distributed free via Apple's FTP servers.

9th September 1996:

According to a memo posted on Ric Ford's MacInTouch site, Apple will release System 7.5.4 Update later this week on all the standard Apple Web and FTP sites.

Yeah, but for like only a few hours though, right?

OK, so it's legal. That's relieving!

It was out for a week. Keep in mind at the time most could not practically do an FTP download! 1996 = most on dial-up. And no automatic software updates! I think that is why its a rare find right now. It was sent out on CD also. But by the time it made it to service providers it was pulled and certainly memos sent out (via mail and email). Which also means there are hard copy update CDs out there somewhere. But I am guessing many got tossed in the trash.

Max I only searched "7.5.4". I'll take a second look later. I also really only have PPCs, so I can't use it at the moment anyway.

If you want it, please PM me. (tanuki65)

Edit: It's on Max's server.

lol

(yes, Max, I forget if I mentioned this, it was in the Betas folder - three versions, I think)

If that date range I found on the release is accurate, it might have been released OEM with the WGS 8550/200 (released September 16, though everymac says 7.5.3).  I wonder if the the 5260/120 (released September 19th) was delayed a day to be downgraded to 7.5.3.  But it might have been released with any of another dozen models also.

Sorry to ask, but can someone provide me with a link to Max's server?

I'm getting curious about all this 7.5.4 stuff.

Thanks,

OK, raoulduke was kind enough to PM me a link, and then I realized that I already had it... somewhere (I misplaced the bookmark I had).
