A 'few' Ebay Purchases

It has been quite a while since i found anything worth buying on ebay. Usually it is broken or overpriced before shipping. I found a relatively local seller who was selling a bunch of older powerbooks and other items.

I am now the owner of a Powerbook Duo 280c with microdock, 2300c with ultradock, and a Newton 120 with accessories.

Total cost = $115CDN including shipping

I also found a stack of 50 sticks of SDRAM for about 15$ which will come in handy when I refurbish some older iMacs.

All in all, a very good, but expensive day.

Nice haul. I agree with shipping problems, which is why I only really buy from Canadian sellers now.

Not a bad haul at all! Especially with the 'docks. What kind of UltraDock did you get - does it have ethernet?

Its the Ultradoc 16sce but I cannot find any information on Google about it so I have no idea what it has. A poor translation on google did net the following in a forum:

It depends on the doc: some (UltraDoc 16sce of Newer and others)

ont un port rj45. have an RJ45 port.

So maybe it has ethernet?

In case anyone was wondering the specs are as follows as stated in the auction:

Duo 2300c 22MB RAR/1.3GB HD

DUO 280c 4MB RAM/30MB? HD (I think it is all an error as the duo came with a 320MB HD base and there is an extra space in front of the 4MB...maybe its 24 MB :) )

Yes, it has ethernet. The letters at the end of the model number tell you what features it has: s for SCSI, c for (I think) colour (as in an external video port) and e for ethernet. The 16sce is the most coveted of them all.

I was considering bidding on that 2300c - I could really use a bunch of junk out of it. I'm glad you picked it up, though, if you're going to use it as a system. I hate pulling parts from stuff I know other people could use.

Good score on those Duos - they were local to you, were they not? Or at least pretty close?

It is located in the same province and that saves a lot of money in shipping.

I do plan to use both as a system. The only other duo I own is a 230 but the passive screen is pretty bad.

You'll be delighted with the 2300c, I'm sure. It's quite a capable little machine - or at least, mine would be if it wasn't riddled with issues. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions, I've accumulated an awful lot of little tidbits of knowledge and hardware curiosities in the past little while.

I'm looking forward to my 2300c. Can't wait and it may arrive tomorrow!

On another conquest (to save a new thread) I found a large tote full of Wallstreets...for free!

There are about 8 total, however I think I can get about 4 functional out of it. 3 have bad/loose adapter sockets and one does not boot at all.

There are 2 14" and the rest are 12". Some screens are broken or just missing. All the HDs, CPUs, and CD drives are there.

The two 14" are a 292 and a 233 w/L2. The rest are 233 w/o L2.

When all is said and done there will be lots left over. Anyone looking for keys, trackpad assembly's, HD mounts, or other case parts let me know. We can work something out with shipping and the time it takes me to remove the part. I may have a CD ROM or two as well.

If you end up with a spare Wallstreet floppy or Zip, let me know. I'd be interested if the shipping is not killer.

Thanks...

John

If you end up with a spare, working Wallstreet, or one that needs relatively little to become functional again, I would be highly interested in purchasing one! A 12" would be DELIGHTFUL!

As in literally found ... like on the street?
Not completly. I got an email yesterday and said he did not want any money for them. It was a project that was permanently delayed. Now they are mine.

The powerbook Duo 2300c work perfectly from what I have been able to test. 24MB RAm and 1.3GB

The Duo 280c has stock RAM at 4MB, system 7.5, and a 40MB HD. It looks like the original drive had been replaced for some reason. It does not sound the greatest. I will probably take the RAM and hard drive from my duo 230 and put it into the 280c.

Now for the conquests:

NIGHT STALKER
The UltraDocks are really awesome! They're the MiniDocks with the huge empty space in the bottom, into which one Japanese Hacker put the AC Adapter, IIRC.

I mention this because I believe that it was this case design which was intended to house the PC-Card Cage from the 1400, It would have run off a sub-set of the 2300's PBX bridged '030 bus which is fully represented on the Docking Connector. The Portable PC-Card Dock was announced, but never produced, the 1400 runs the same PBX bridged '030 slow I/O bus as the 2300c and their Block Diagrams are nearly identical.

Whatever, you've got a piece of DuoHistory that I've never laid eyes or hands upon IRL! Lucky }:) !!!!!!

Interesting tidbit. One of the floppy drives was once the property of Apple computer. There is a green sticker on the side.

After owning each unit for the past few days I have swapped the RAM card and Hard drive in the 230 into the 280c. Still works great and I gained new experience in opening up a duo.

The 2300c has a few quirks: the trackpad acts up when it boots and for a while afterward, and it will not wake from sleep properly.

The 280c did not like system 7.5.5 on the 120MB I pulled from the 230. It kept bombing mid boot however I eventually disabled the right extension causing the issue (I am still not sure exactly which one it is...project for later).

The 230 now has the old 40MB drive that is suspect but works at this point. If it dies, I have a 160 around that I do not have a power supply for but has a 40MB hard drive in it.
