OK, I think I've figured out a possible solution to the first issue. I could place small washers on the LHS screw, but below the brace so that I can adjust the force on the heatsink.
Hi folks,
Back around 2016, my beloved PowerBook G4 12" fell off a table and the inner pin from the PSU cable broke, falling into the PBook's case. I took it apart to remove it, which was successful, but when reassembling, I found the LHS heatsink screw was stripped.
(I marked half the top...
Or @croissantking : if I sent either of you the iBook, would you want to do that? Would you prefer me to send the logic board suitably enclosed and protected from shock or the whole thing?
I still think setting up periodical workshops would be something to think about in order to pass on...
How do you know it's a GPU issue and not an LCD cable issue? I ask, because I have an iBook G3 which I believed had a GPU issue, but then someone said it might be an LCD cable issue (though this thread is about the GPU): https://68kmla.org/bb/threads/pseudo-mac-mini-g3.50865/
@pc2005 , https://datasheets.chipdb.org/Chips/F8680A_Rev_2_0.pdf is the data sheet Rev 2. I may have some additional documentation in my Dad's attic, I'll check. We certainly had the documentation. Mostly it was an 80286 type instruction set without Protected mode as such, but you could do...
I knew about disabling the cache, but didn't think about the System 7 limitation. The P400 will run System 6.0.8. I think what I meant about the cache is that I suspect it's possible to contrive code for a P400 with its cache turned on, that would fail to run correctly on an LC475 with or...
I'll jump in first as it'll be the least knowledgable (and because I have a P400)! the LC475 is an '040, so there are some things that can run on the '030-based P400 that won't on an LC475, e.g. due to cache differences. The CC is essentially the same as a P400 except that the screen resolution...
Hi folks,
A friend of mine (the chap with the PB5300c I still haven't fixed) gave me a whole bunch of 30-pin SIMMs when I picked up the B&W G3.
Size/SIMM (Bytes)SIMMSModeSpeed
256kB4FPM120ns
1MB2FPM80ns
1MB4FPM80ns
1MB4FPM80ns
4MB5FPM60ns
So, that's 19 SIMMs! It's non-trivial...
It’s really more like I’m imagining how DAW type editing could be done with more limited hardware: multiple tracks would get mixed in software in non-realtime. I’m not claiming that’s how Digidesign did it.
ok I understand, CD kHz, but only 8-bit uLaw quality.
I decided to look through MacWorld, March 1989 for hard disk prices.

I'm just hypothesising w.r.t the bandwidth. According to LEM The Mac II could manage 1.4MB/s. So, if we assume that all our individual tracks are mono, but with MIDI panning data, then for editing, say t1 to t2 they can be pre-mixed into a single stereo track at 176.4kB/s and read from HD. So...
Yes, it's the bandwidth that governs it, particularly bandwidth to disks. Then on top of that one needs numerous DSPs (in DigiDesign's case, Motorola 56001 series). But DSPs themselves are basically high-bandwidth CPUs. And one needs the corresponding memory bandwidth.

It's interesting how computers that were once awesome media editing systems are later inadequate for even the simplest of tasks. ProTools itself started out as DigiDesign's Sound Designer for, I guess, the Mac 512; with which you could edit sounds from early Sampling keyboards rather like a...
Well, I've looked on my Zip 100 disks, but wasn't able to find them. However, on the excellent MacGUI site I found downloads to MacGhostScript 1.0 and 2.5.
This should be enough to get on with!
Hmmm, you say this, but I remember being part of the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games choir and seeing the BBC use a Pismo (or another G3 PowerBook) to edit our takes for Songs of Praise. Quite odd really: it was shot outside (1 cam) and the G3 was under a small gazebo frantically being used...
(and @harrymatic ) I don't think that's really true. For example, Cubase Lite will work without any MIDI manager since the MIDI interface can be driven directly from the application based on a 500kHz, 1MHz or 2MHz clock.

Hi @old_hitech. I was able to unzip the zbasic.sit file using the Stuffit Expander available via Infinite Mac (I used the Quadra 650 emulator). Inside there's an image for ZBasic 3.02. I was able to mount that using DiskCopy. I then copied that to my local MacBook and then opened the disk using...
