550MHz G4 PowerBook (Pismo vs Titanium)

According to AI (not the best source) the Archimedes could playback eight 8bit audio channels, not eight 16bit channels. To get 16bit it had to combine multiple 8bit channels. Additionally, the mixing was done in software so there was an overhead that made 4 channels of 16bit 44.1khz difficult if not impossible.

The above is not validated by real research, but I didn't lead it, I asked it to explain multi channel audio on the arch to me.

This is not quite what this means you're kind of mixing hardware and software - the DigiDesign extract is taking about physical hardware outputs, but you're talking about the platforms ability to mix playback channels.
It’s really more like I’m imagining how DAW type editing could be done with more limited hardware: multiple tracks would get mixed in software in non-realtime. I’m not claiming that’s how Digidesign did it.
Also, surely the Acorn can't play 8 tracks of CD quality at once? Or do you just mean 8 tracks of audio of any quality?
ok I understand, CD kHz, but only 8-bit uLaw quality.
