Something you don't see much of in Australia...

So last weekend I decided to buy myself a little present. And today it completed its trip to its new home in Sydney, a loooooooong way from its previous life in Sweet Home Alabama:

That, my friends, is an official, original, USDM 2G iPhone. I haven't really had a chance to use it much yet, since it needs to be activated, and its still locked to AT&T (have to say though...how awesome is that? A phone in Australia that locked to AT&T), which means that it no likey my Telstra SIM from my 3GS, though that is an issue that I will rectify over the weekend. I bought it because it was cheap (around AU$37ish after the exchange rate), and because I imagine that one day it will be just as much of a collectable as my original Mac (which I picked up for a sweet $15 in 1999), perhaps even moreso here in Australia since we didn't get the original iPhone - we had to wait for the iPhone 3G.

Cool.

I bought an original iPhone last month from a guy in Mactalk. it works with Telstra SIM, so I assume it's hacked.

Yeah, I remember iPhone 3G. I queued for hours outside Apple Store in George St.

Bought an original iPhone off eBay almost a year ago. Just sitting in my tech drawer rotting in its case. I tried downgrading it to 1.1.1 (even with the carrier update) from 3.1.3, no luck. For whatever reason, the AT&T SIM card still has the phone number attached to it, so I can activate it iTunes, but I can't make or receive phone calls.

Yours LCGuy is in amazing condition for the age though!

If its possible, I'd like to downgrade this one to 1.1.1 one day, just to make it like an iPhone from 2007. Ideally I'd have the best of both worlds - have it unlocked so that I can use it on Australian networks, but also dropped back to 1.1.1 for originality's sake.

And 24 hours later, here it is, activated, unlocked, and on the Telstra network :)

Its limited to EDGE, so not quite as fast as my 3GS, but given that its going to be on my WiFi 99% of the time anyway its not like it matters.

Please let us know once you figured out how.

Because of this, I refrained myself from upgrading my iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S to iOS 6.1.
