SE Revival

So I have a strange thing going on..

Used a 4GB SCSI HD, partitioned into 2 x 2GB partitions. Installed System 7.1 on one of them with no install errors.

Booting off the disk on the SE works fine but any changes to the filesystem on the disk get discarded on next boot ? i.e move an extension into the extension folder, and reboot and its back in its original location. Also attempting to make an alias results in a Out Of Memory error..

What is going on here, anyone have any clue ?

Maybe prepping the drive with Drive Setup on the 7600 (i.e 9.1 drive set up) has horribly confused the SE ? I really dont know ..

Went back to the 20MB HD that came with the SE and formatted and installed 7.1 on that via the 7600 but using disk tools from the 7.1 floppy image set to prep the drive and all is well.

Well aside from this accelerator clearly not being able to deliver any more then 4MB total under any circumstance that is. With most of the SIMMS I have here it sad macs, the only SIMM set to work is the 4x16MB set I have fitted in all four slots.. just gives me 4MB RAM which is silly though...

Out of curiosity, is that 20MB drive a Rodime or a Miniscribe?
I have not removed it from the sled to be 100% sure what it is as yet as there has been no need to. Remarkably I see, or rather hear no signs of any bearing issues or anything with it which is pretty amazing tbh. Also being able to watch the head stepper work on these old drives is cool as hell.

So I remembered a while ago I bought these with the intention of getting the SE on the network, I could never get it working..

Feel like it may be worth trying again ..

Anyone have any idea what software I need or what I need to do ?

I had a similar problem where my SE did the same thing. The way I solved it was by making each partition slightly smaller than 2GB. I found that if I made the partitions on the limit, everything became glitchy, so I now use 1.8GB partitions instead.

I used the A2SERVER program to run a Raspberry Pi server that both my modern computers and older Macs could connect to. The Raspberry Pi and the LocalTalk adapter need to be on the same LAN to find each other. It takes a bit of networking and Linux knowledge to set up, but it works very well.

There are several pre-existing threads about setting this up as well as the documentation linked below if you are interested.

Do I need to do anything special on the SE, in terms of additional software beyond a default System 7.1 Install ? this is one part I am unclear about.

I have A2Server running but the SE is not seeing anything in Chooser.

Am using the Astarte Microprint in the picture I posted.

Connected to my LAN via a Ethernet to Wireless bridge it blinks the RX LED sometimes, and the LT LED at 1 second intervals.

Connected directly to the Router via a actual Ethernet cable only the Power LED is lit.

EDIT:

Similar behaviour on the Fallaron Ethermac to..

Ok so if anyone else has had similar issues to this I fixed it, here is was I did.

Get an old router, older the better. and try that as a "bridge" to your modern router,

I used a Netgear DG834G I had laying around, turned of DCHP and used it as a switch to "bridge" from the Ashante Microprint to my main modern router and It works ?

This is a problem with autonegotiating 10/100 or 10/100/1G ethernet ports.  Autonegotiation is how the two ends of the wire work out what their mutual speed and duplex settings ought to be.  Older ethernet stations sometimes don't play nicely with autonegotiation.  So the option is either to get something that doesn't do autonegotiation, or to use a managed switch and force a port to 10meg.

This is aggravating ..simply can not get this to work at all. Anyone able to help ?
I didn't read the full thread so idk if you tried this or not, but can you ping A2server?
open command prompt, type "ping a2server" and see if it responds with anything

If not, log into your router, see if you can find DHCP Leases, and find the one for the a2server.

Once you find that, connect to it as \\ipaddress\a2files (\\192.168.1.105\a2files for example)

Do you  have access to the pi with ssh? Then you can get a connection to the pi with putty and use the command

nbplkup

to see which computer is seen by the the localtalk net.

In my case you can see the raspberry and a bananapi with MacIPPi and the Asante print.

My windows 7 computer can see the A2files in the network (german: Netzwerk).10D9DD0D-518F-4C00-B6EF-C551CDBA42A5.jpeg

I am not using a Pi. I am using a VM for the A2SERVER.

I can ping the A2SERVER VM just fine.

This is what I see in Network and trying to double click on A2FILES gives the error I posted no matter what I do, rendering A2SERVER useless as I can not get files on to it even tho it works fine on the Mac end:

Perhaps a problem with the VM? I never heared this for a raspberry pi.

Are you logged in in windows as an administrator?

I am trying this again this time on a really old Pi (1B 512MB) I found in a draw see what happens.

To clarify, the intended use of the "A2FILES" Samba share is to upload files that are then to be accessed by the A2FILES Appletalk share on the Mac side of things correct ?

This is correct. Something else you could try is to use SFTP to access the share from a modern machine instead of Samba. To rule out possible problems with the VM, I would recommend trying again with your Raspberry Pi.

I was able to use an old Pi Model B without any issues when setting up my server just a few months ago.
