Recompiling the Kernel on this old Pi (to add Appletalk) was prehaps not the best idea.. nearly 3 hours so far and its not done..

So 20 hours of recompiling the kernel later and this does not work ? I set Appletalk as a built in driver, but for some reason It is not loading, and netatalk is not loading or setting up correctly, complaining about missing directory's/files all to do with netatalk mostly i,e "sudo: /etc/init.d/netatalk: command not found"

Also when I reran the A2Server setup it overote the kernel and modules again with a v3 kernel etc instead of my custom v4 w/ appletalk enabled as a built in driver ?

I dont get this at all. Its all a mess...

Sorry to hear it didn't work. Unfortunately, the Pi probably stopped working many many hours before this and was not really compiling at all. You will likely have better results with a newer model Pi 2 or 3. They have much faster processors and more memory and should only take a few hours to compile at maximum. (I don't think the Pi 4 supports the required version of netatalk, so I would avoid it for this project)

I already have to many SBCs/Dev boards, can not justify buying another one for this one small task. So am in a bit of a bind tbh. I mean I could use one of them to do this by manualy setting up appletalk/netatalk etc i guess but that seems like a lot of effort..
