Quicksilver Network issue

I'm trying to fix a Quicksilver (qs 2002), it runs OS9 and Panther but I'm having issues networking. I'm pretty sure the network uses DHCP but I can't connect to anything. It's a neglected mac but I can't tell the problem lies with the cable and connection or the port. In OSX the networking panel just lists the 56k modem as disconnected, no mention of other types of connections. Using the system profiler network shows that the link is down for en0 and that it has received 0 bytes and sent 0 bytes.

I've hit the cuda button and reset the open firmware. I can take hints in OS9 and X. Any help would be appreciated.

Does it sound like the Mac is the problem or the connection?

Is there a way to run a diagnostic on the port without a network connection?

It turns out it was the cord was not in a port that was hooked into the network. Once you connect an ethernet cable with a network connection it will show up in the list in the network pane of system preferences.
