powerbook g4

hi again,

sorry for leaving some posts unreplied, i had a harsh time during holidays.

soo.. i finally traded my macbook for a powerbook g4 15" 1.5 ghz. it is the one without sms. the advantage is that it has a region-free dl dvd-rw and came with 1.5 gigs of ram, so i will not have to spend lots of money on upgrades.

i would like to ask some things about it though,

i have noticed that there is only one fan spinning on the left side. istat pro reports realistic speeds for the left one, but the right one stays at 0 rpm. is this normal? i think it should have two fans, but not sure..

other thing is that with tiger it runs extremely well (even the single fan is mostly silent and in some cases it outperforms my former macbook - though that may be because of me running risc-friendly processes). but it hates leopard.. my quicksilver is 'stunningly fast' (to quote steve) with leo despite it is only 867 mhz, but the powerbook is constantly spinning the fan, uses the cpu between 60% and 80% with only system processes (and no spotlight indexing) and so on.. should i stay with tiger or what do you think, is there any chance that 10.5.2 will fix this? or am i doing something completely wrong?

thanks

p.s. (posted about this at ppcmla too: http://www.ppcmla.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=254)

honestly, i think you made such a bad decision when you traded the MB for a PBG4. These machines were powerful in their time, but now they are becoming obselete. apple is trying to phase out all the old machines, like mine and yours. my TiG4 is starting to show it's age badly, and i need an upgrade soon.

i don't know about the fan on the right, but it should be looked into.

with your leo performance probs, i honestly don't know what's up. my 1ghz TiPBG4 runs leo well with little or no lag.

sorry to hear you say that, sometimes i'm thinking the same thing. i would've gone for the mbp but i had'nt enough money. my main reason was durability: the macbook got too many scratches in my backpack and i almost broke the hinge once.

interesting thing is that the pbg4 fw800's manual shows two fans, so that is more probable. i suppose the 12" model is the one with only one fan.

today the 10.5.2 update arrived and although the overall graphics performance is better, i still get the weird cpu usages.. you might be right about apple being less willing to support older configurations. sometimes i feel nostalgic about 10 years of backward compatibility..

one question though: can your tibook boot into os9 natively?
