PowerBook 180C barrel connector shorted to ground

I have a PowerBook 180C that does not power on and heats up at the connector. I checked for scorches near the barrel and DC-in board but didn't see anything suspect. I checked the barrel connections and found the tip and sleeve shorted to ground. The insertion detect pin works okay. I removed the connector and found that it is not short on its own. The pads on either side of the MLB are also not shorted. Is it possible for there to be a short on the inner layers? Anything I can do to fix that?

When you say that you "checked the barrel connections and found the tip and sleeve shorted to ground", is that on the adapter side or within the PB?

Since it sounds like you've opened it up to remove the connector, what do you read on the battery terminals? Are they shorted together? What happens if you apply 7.5v there (minding the polarity, you should be able to power it up)?

The powerbook side. I compared to a working 180C which was not short at the socket. Will check the battery terminals, but they should be open since no battery was installed. Are you suggesting applying bench power to the battery terminals?
