With a bonus LC475 and a couple of StyleWriter IIs.

Seller said they power on, but couldn't test them. See if I still have a 13w3 cable...

…which I don't. Damn, the things I've thrown out over the years...

I seem to recall that the two-page display used a 13W3 with all three big pins, whereas the portrait display had some sub-set of the pins in it. Most of the eBay cables seem to have all pins. Anyone know if that's a problem?

I also see here

that Sun and Apple cables might not be compatible. How very old school Apple.

NIGHT STALKER
Wikipedia's pretty good, but no Apple: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DB13W3

Link there leads to pinouts.ru, but again no Apple: http://connector.pinouts.ru/13_pin_13W3_female/

There was a thread about this not all that long ago. Don't remember where, ought to be in peripherals, but I doubt it. So much good info winds up buried in a thread in some model specific forum or other instead of where it belongs might be generally useful. :-/

edit: BOOM! p.30 Ports_Pinouts.pdf     Notice the Portrait model version bit. My portrait must be the later version. I bought a dual purpose cable that didn't work. It gave me scrunched TPD resolution on my FPD Portrait. Too tired to think much about it ATM.

You say g'day and I say g'nite! :sadmac:   zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Reread that PDF now that I'm awake. Looks like it referred to the Portrait interface card versions, not to the Portrait itself. There's still the chance of getting a cable that does the Two-Page Portrait scrunch, but that can be fixed with a sense line mod. Went through that with a Griffen engineer's help back in the day. Curious that their cable didn't work straight out of the bag as advertised. They made fabulous, bullet proof products in the day.

In any event, you can get any of the above 13w3 cable and chop it into two sections for making up your own Macintosh Portrait Display cables.

Yikes, now I have to look at my NuBus cards as well. This is complicated!

Luckily I found a guy in Australia selling one of the 13w3 single coax to DB-15 cables which should let me test the screens with a Quadra 700 — if they both work I can think about getting one up and running with my older machines (or two with one Quadra? Or maybe it's time to get the IIfx up and running. Or the IIcx they're designed for! So many options...). Hopefully it won't come to building my own cables, for I will certainly mess that up.

Thanks for your help Night Stalker. Let y'all know how I go.

A $5 DB15-13W3 cable (bargain!) and $11 worth of express postage and...

Two from two! Yes! Nice solid images, no apparent burn-in.

So I've ordered the $40 cable from the States.

Oh, and the LC 475 works too.

This has been a good day.

Finally got around to the double-portrait Quadra last night to finish my job application. Pretty sweet, but the Quadra 700 internal video won’t run it happily in other than 256 colours/greys. If B/W the pixels flicker like it’s got an animated CLUT table. E8883A81-B446-4754-A06A-1A7DB6F76FD1.jpeg

No, one’s off the internal and one’s off a nubus video card. I’m going to install a second nubus card and run a three-headed monster, I think. Showed my 2.5yo daughter Prince of Persia in greyscale and she loved it. Then I showed her in colour and stepped into one of the choppers. Oops.

Mwahahaha! Three heads are better than one. Also let’s me drag SimCity 2000 onto a black and white screen, which...does not work well.B2E7CDDF-ED53-4658-ADE1-5B6B554A2112.jpeg

I've always wondered if Beyond Dark Castle supported the portrait monitor.  It had those extra tall levels that seem to be perfect for a portrait display.

That would be cool. But alas, no way. I’m pretty sure that game insists on one-bit 512x342, actually, no?

It won't work. I tried to get it to work on the Portable once, and even then the graphics were screwed up.

I got the original Dark Castle working on my PB170 under system 6. I think it's multifinder that gets it more than anything, so the Quadra won't be any good. Once I get my Iici back up and running I'll try it out.

That said, it didn't fill the screen on the 170 - just a window. The labyrinth would be rad.

Now that you mention it, I think I did have Beyond Dark Castle running on a Mac II circa 1987.  But definitely in a 512x342 window (if that memory is even accurate...).
