Persistent Type 2 Error

Beige g3 running OS 8.6

I did a lot of searching for a similar issue both here and through Google, but didn't turn up any useful information.  I didn't see an OS forum. Since I am using a beige G3, this is where I decided to ask the question.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

The G3 has been chugging along for years, but the Chooser started crashing yesterday with an error type 2.  The Finder still works, and if you try to access the chooser again, you get an error type -97.

Behavior noted before this started:  The Applescript extension was taking a very long time to load, and the startup screen would temporarily blank, except for the little watch icon.  It would load back up again, once Applescript was almost completely loaded. Then, some other Macs on the network would load in File Sharing at startup even though they weren't checked off in the Chooser to do so.

Zapping the PRAM got rid of the weird loading issues with Applescript and the uninvited networked Macs problem, but the Chooser is still crashing.

I ran Norton Utilities about a month ago and defragmented the disk, ran Disk Doctor, and everything seemed to be fine.  I also own Tech Tool Pro, so I may go that direction next, and see if it finds anything.

Would doing a fresh install of the OS be a good direction to take instead of trying to solve the problem with doctoring software?

Have you tried trashing Chooser's preference file?

Sometimes an application with corrupted preference files will behave oddly or crash, and trashing that file will allow the application to recreate a new one with default settings, thereby usually solving the crash problem.

I'd say maybe some RAM is getting iffy, but the nature of the problem is so specific.  Nevertheless, it wouldn't hurt to test the RAM, so it can be eliminated as a potential problem.

Aside from that, I have no clue.

Also perhaps the AppleShare preferences worth getting rid of if you were having ghost server problems. That could cause Chooser issues...

I didn't try these tips, but I will keep them on file for future reference.  I ended up doing a clean install of the operating system and removing AfterDark.  As far as I can tell the problem has been solved.  The user is no longer experiencing crashes and error messages.  The only thing he currently complains about is the loss of his screensaver.
