Mobius 030 + 16MB RAM

Yup, quite silly!

I'm going to give System 7.1 Z-International + System Update 3.0 a try, with the GemStart 3.0 drivers + Compact Virtual 3.0.2.
So far that driver seems more reliable than the Mobius ones to me, and I think you don't need the Mobius sound fix extension (which is limited to 7.0.1 or older).

You might want the US version, not international?

I want a Norwegian keyboard layout and Norwegian date/time format, I thought it was maybe included with the international version?

I'd save them from your current OS and add them to the US version. My logic being, if it doesn't work with all the other languages except US, why would it work with "International" : international is also a non US language same as "British".

Yes I'm aware that it would make the most sense to test the US version first, but I'm curious about this and I have a lot of time, so it doesn't hurt to try.

Good good. Just worrying you hadn't relised that US <> English in terms of OS versions.

So I tried System 7.1 International + System Update 3.0 + GemStart 3.0 + Compact Virtual 3.0.2.

Virtual has the "RAM Disk Settings" option now. However, "About This Macintosh" still says that 8MB is used as RAM on Macintosh HD, and there's still an 8MB "VIRTUAL SwapFile" file inside System Folder.

Did you verify that you didn't get the swap file, and that "About This Macintosh" didn't show the HDD RAM thing, Phipli?

It works with my other cards and the manual discusses the process. As long as the RAM is in the address space, Virtual should be able to do it.

Like I mentioned, I have a Total Systems card that works with it absolutely fine in my SE at the moment and my Mobius had an 68EC030 fitted, so no MMU to test Virtual Memory without switching chips. See the Memory Read/Write speed score here, vs a Quadra 700. The RAM is going vastly faster than the logic board RAM could, let alone the disk.

Again, can you verify that there is no "VIRTUAL SwapFile" in your System Folder? And how does your "About This Macintosh" look like?
I just want to verify if this is normal or not.

I see, I thought you had the SE with the Virtual stuff installed available at the moment, after you posted the screenshots.

Interesting. I tried System 7.1 US + Compact Virtual 3.0.2 with Mobius selected during install.
Now I get no swap file, and "About This Macintosh" doesn't mention anything about HDD RAM.

Success, I guess. I'll experiment a bit more with this, as I want to use GemStart 3.0. I need something to fix the audio anyway.

EDIT:
Experiment #1: Virtual + Gemini Ultra = doesn't work, so this is definitely not a Total Systems card, it's a Mobius card.
This probably means that I need to stay at System 7.0.1 (since I need the Mobius sound fix), unless GemStart 3.0 really is a safe driver to use with Mobius.

Good news.

I agree that it isn't a TS board, but the closest equivalent would be the Gemini 020/030, not the Ultra.

Move the mobius control panel and extensions out of the System Folder and install GemStart. Leave Virtual exactly as it is. See where that gets you.

I did that, and everything seems to work fine. Audio too. But if this driver is meant for a Gemini Ultra/Integra, I can't be sure if it really is wise to use this driver with a Mobius.

Weirdly there is very little difference.

The CPU and FPU are on the same pins, virtual deals with the expanded RAM address locations... there isn't a whole lot left for the driver to deal with.

What they mostly manage are the ROM patches to deal with the increase speed (e.g. floppy control, sound, hard disk), so as long as the card you have and the card your driver thinks it is are the same speed, things mostly just work.

There are exceptions. My Gemini Ultra starts with a clock divider set (at 25MHz) and then once the ROM patches are applied, bumps the card to 50MHz. Without the GemStart control panel it just stays at 25MHz.

Alright.

Btw, got System 7.1 International + System Update 3.0 + GemStart 3.0 + Virtual to work now. What I did wrong the first time was to not select Mobius under install. So System 7.1 International works too, but not French and Norwegian.

That's weird as heck... I'll have to revisit the whole SE + RAM on an accelerator topic at some point. I do remember that I had the swap file in the system folder as well - can't remember what it said exactly in "About this Mac".
Only thing I can tell is that I was using German system software.

Daystar PowerCache adapter with 16MB of RAM on it and Extreme Systems Vandal with 16MB (or up to 64?) to test with. I forgot which variant of the Gemini was the same as the Vandal...

If the swap file was there, it wasn't working right :ROFLMAO:

The Vandal is a Gemini Integra (Integra because they can't spell Integrated Graphics).

The Vandal is in the list in Compact Virtual though.
