Mac SE/30 - $125

It was a bit of a drive to pick up the machine, but thanks to @volvo242gt for letting me know about this machine's existence. Had been looking on and off for an SE/30 and I figured it was time to take the plunge... and I figured $125 wasn't a bad price (whether or not the logic board was toast) From what I can see its mostly original; from what I can tell the caps haven't done much leaking and I was able to get it to boot off the BlueSCSI first try. There was no startup sound so I'm assuming it may be cap related. Since my own soldering skills are to be desired, I will be looking for somebody local who can do the job for me.

It appears this machine was taken better care of than the two SEs I picked up a while back. I think instead of being housed in a barn, it was stowed away in a closet of some kind. Nonetheless, this machine has much less yellowing than the SEs, but the Apple logo is faded and there are some scuff marks and such... seems normal for those who aren't collectors.

Is that really a 2GB disk? That's huge!!

Lovely looking machine. It will clean up very well, and if you're concerned, I'm sure you can find a replacement Apple badge. I think it adds character though :)

The closest RAM SIMM is a 4MB SIMM, and looks like its 3 siblings are in the other bank, meaning I guess it also has an insane amount of RAM (or the RAM urgently needs reorganising 🤣) is that 32MB of RAM?

Quite a find.

Nice find! I think battle scars show the history of the device. The color shifted logo is pretty cool, honestly.

Irrationally, the red hard drive chassis grabbed my eye too. I shouldn't like it, but I do.

I had a feeling the seller did some upgrades to it, or maybe the owner before him did some kind of upgrades. I wasn't sure if that red HDD chassis was stock, but if I compare it to my SE's it didn't seem like it. Looks like the HDD may be dead (X symbol) so I booted off the BlueSCSI again to check the RAM.... looks like 8MB? I also popped in a floppy disk and it started making a whine sound and got the ? symbol so it may need to be greased. (I also only own 800kb floppies and I think the SE/30 is 1.44 but somebody may need to correct me on that)

You need to install MODE32 and turn it on, then turn on 32bit addressing in the Memory control panel...

If that doesn't work, you need to put the Memory back in matched groups of 4... because two are swapped at the moment (but that won't matter too much if they're all 4MB SIMMs).

Also found a sticker on the bottom of the case. (The seller wasn't named John nor do I live in California)

Do you think I could add the .sit file to the BlueSCSI and install it? (I might need stuffit expander too)

Yeah, have you done it before? You need to add it into the disk image using an emulator like mini vmac usually.

I'm familiar with vmac but I haven't transferred files back and forth with an sd card but I suppose this could be a good first attempt.

I think the newer bluescsi has some file transfer mechanism you can use. Or, you can use a newer version of basilliskII (that understands .hda hard drive images) to inject files also.

https://a2ciderpress.com/ this might work too, but I haven't tried it.

Edit: here's the bluescsi V2 thing. Haven't tried it.
For the bluescsi direct file transfer thing you need a program on the image to manage it, so it is just an extra step. Great for later, but can't be done as things are.

I have Version 1.1a which requires the STSLink device (which I may have in storage) so I will need to make do with transferring files to the sd card directly. I have access to vmac and Sheepshaver but it doesn't appear that they are able to see the mounted sd card. This is all quite new territory for me so I do apologize for my ignorance and any advice would be appreciated.

You need to connect them to the disk images, not the SD card... do I remember you can just drag and drop a disk image onto the window??? I don't use Mini vMac on a desktop often. I mostly use it on my phone.

Cool. That hard drive sled I'm actually looking for. I'll trade you back your Rominator II for it... Sled seems to be going for $35-$40 on the 'bay, and a new BMOW Rominator II looks to be $45.

Oh I just bought a second one…. Like a couple hours ago. You can have it for free. You want the red one that came with the SE/30 or one of the ones from the SE?

Oh, ok... lol

Yeah, if you don't mind, the red one is what'll work best with the 230MB drive in my SE. Still using the original style bracket, which holds said drive in place with only two screws.

Once I get the SE/30 recapped from your buddy that will be my main machine and I’ll use a BlueSCSI or a zuluscsc

Yeah no problem. The hard drive is dead from what I can tell so I’ll just be using a bluescsi or zuluscsi for the se/30 (preferably something internal) and then once the SEs are done I’ll be selling those off… your buddy will be able to recap the se/30 for cheap, just have to make sure he has time for it
