Laserwriter 16/600 problems

I picked up a used 16/600 recently recently but can't get it too work. Both RAM slots are full and it has the internal HD. On powerup all the status lights flash as they should then it sits with the "paper out" and "paper jam" lights flashing alternatively. The paper tray is full and there is no paper stuck anywhere in the printer.

Any thoughts?? Scott Baret, maybe??

The flashing lights suggests that the printer diagnostics have spotted a meaningful problem. Have you located the service manual for the printer yet?

Less probably, you have two sensors that are stuck. Disassemble and clean, just in case, but it is a worthwhile exercise in itself.

Thanks for the reply. No service manual yet but one should be here early next week. I disassembled as much of the printer as I dared without instructions but no joy yet. One suggestion from a Google search is a faulty exit sensor on the fuser assembly, so that's the next thing to check.

After downloading that Service Manual it quickly became obvious that the problem was a dead internal HD. I disconnected the HD and the printer now works great on my LAN from OS 9 machines, using the Apple Printer Utility for setup. However, the IP address is set to 0.0.0.0 so I haven't yet figured out how to set that so the printer is usable from OS X.

Anyway, progress, and thanks for the help.

X (all versions) will print to a Laserwriter printer on Appletalk, so long as Appletalk is enabled in X. It should be seamless - assuming the printer is on your ethernet network, via AAUI and all that.

What sort of cable was the drive connected to the logic board with? I have the 68030 + 68882 cousin of the 16/600, a Laserwriter Pro 630, but am unsure how to get a hard drive installed in it. Is it a 68k powerbook cable, by any chance, or something else?

Once I looked more carefully at the Apple Printer Utility it was no problem setting the printer IP address. Then it was simply a matter of setting the parameters in the Tiger printer setup utility and it works great from Tiger over the Ethernet LAN.

The HD is a Quantum Go disk, some of which are IDE but the manual says it's an SCSI interface for both the internal and external disks. The internal connector is a 40 pin ribbon connector about 1 3/4 inches long. Never having any contact with Powerbooks, I don't know if that's the same cable.
