iBook G3 Clamshell - approximate value?

A local pawn shop has an iBook G3 laptop for $150, looks great, runs fine. Was wondering what the value of one these would be, is this anywhere near a decent deal on one? I don't trust eBay at all for judging this. Thanks.

I personally wouldn't pay more than $50 for a clamshell $100 if it's a 466. Otherwise I'd get a pismo.

Just my .02.

If you go by eBay prices, it's a nice deal actually. What makes it even sweeter is it doesn't get destroyed in shipping and you actually went in and looked at it. If it looks good and runs nice...get it. Especially if you have the need for one.

FWIW, around these parts (Silicon Valley), clamshells are going for around $100 (a bit more for the 466MHz generation). Icebooks are going for only a little more than that, with Airport- and combo-drive-equipped models commanding higher prices.

Yeah, it's a fugly clamshell (teal-coloured), and maybe I can bargain with them a bit. Thanks for the input!

As fast as computer and video game hardware depreciates, I am surprised pawn shops deal in them at all. If I get $200 for a computer from a pawn shop, all I do is wait a few months and I can get a better computer for that $200, so why am I going to redeem the pawn ticket? How is the pawn shop going to get their $200 back when you can get a better computer for that money?

Pawn shops make money selling items like computers to suckers.

I have found great deals on hand tools. I have picked up vicegrips, screwdrivers, torque wrenches and more. Never paid more than a few bucks for the better tools and common hand tools can be found for less than $2.

It's amazing what people will sell to get high, huh?

Its funny what people will sell today because they need gas to get to work.

Pawn shops pay very little for electronics and jack up the prices when they try to resell it (knowing some will sell and others will not).

Don't most pawnshops sell on ebay?

I personally like the clamshell iBooks... I paid about $630 for my Blueberry back in 2002. I still have it, though I modded it to remove the white metal shielding because it was collecting bits of black dust behind the LCD. It looks awesome now.

I paid $200 for my pristine Tangerine iBook last year, as it came with its original disks, AirPort, an external USB hard drive, and a boxed VST Zip drive. Its original 3GB hard drive needed replaced (because it was waaay too small to be usable), but I upgraded to a new 16GB drive in about half an hour (I've had those things apart more than once).

They're both awesome machines. The only issue I have with them is that they're only 800x600, which is kind of cramped, particularly under OS X. They're built like tanks otherwise, and I still love the handle.

Anyways, the first gen models (Blueberry and Tangerine) are fairly common, so they're pretty inexpensive. The 2nd gen is a little faster, and added Indigo. The final versions had FireWire, DVDROM drives, faster processors, and faster GPUs. Plus, some of them (particularly the Key Lime) were fairly limited, and thus are still a little expensive, at least when in good shape.

I'd say between $100 and 150 for an original, $150 and $200 for the 2nd version, and up to $350 or so for a Key Lime clamshell in good shape. Obviously, condition and accessories dictate prices. If they want $150 for a stripped original Blueberry with a dead battery, covered in scratches, without even a power adapter, I'd walk away. The power adapters alone (Apple originals, anyway) are at least $20 used.

At any rate, for $150 you can almost get a Pismo on ebay these days, so if you have a little more you can get a better computer than a clamshell iBook.
