I think the cracked app just lets you use and old serial number. I guess you'll find out in a month after installing if it doesn't accept outside calls...

Well then, I guess we'll find out . I'll see if I can timewarp a few months and see what happens.
It takes the serial #, but what ends up happening is that it LOOKS like it's working, but if you're posting a message in a message base, you can get about 23 characters in and it kicks you off. I thought I was nuts but I can take a fresh install, it works fine.. apply the serial, and the above happens...

Interesting, so the crack really didn't work. I'll let Sidd know.

Thanks much. It's not so much that it didn't work it seems - it did exactly what it was supposed to do - it allowed the use of the old serial #. However, somewhere in the code of the program it's supposed to do something odd when it comes across that serial #.

Sidd's gonna take a look into it and hopefully he can at least disable the serial number check in the message editor. I believe that the program is fully functional otherwise, correct?

Because I have absolutely no life, I spent a couple of hours going down the rabbit hole of old Usenet posts to see what was going on at the time.
Depending on who was posting, the message area was definitely the issue, and other people said that it would break your OS, reset your PRAM, steal your firstborn, etc. Possibly, at the very least, cause the system to become unstable.
Just based on my own observation, it SEEMS to just be the message bases. I was able to setup externals with no issues (some crashed, but that's due to incompatibilities between versions). File areas seem to work fine.
If you take that same serial # and put it on version 3.0 instead of 3.1.1, if you post a message, the bar across the message that shows you how far you can type per line 'shrunk' from 80 columns to about 23. When you hit the end of that bar, it crashes.
Hopefully that makes sense.

Haha! Thanks for going down the rabbit hole. Now that I think about it, I ran into the same issue with the message posting crash but just thought I had an unstable copy of the program. That's one of the reasons I went with v3.5.11 running as a game server on my BBS instead of v3.1.1.
Were you ever able to find more door games than what I did?

Yup, and while going down the rabbit hole I started downloading (and still am) shareware CDs and such that have externals on them. Some might be useful, some not, but I have about 30 sitting on the board right now and maybe 100+ sitting in a dir.

I was only able to get two more door games to work under v3.1.1 out of that bunch - Leech and The World Sucks. What other games were you able to get working?

I'm curious why so many of the externals/addons simply don't work at all - they either crash the BBS or the OS entirely. Presumably at some point they worked, so it's puzzling.
3.1.1 does seem like the ideal version if running doors is the goal since it has the greatest compatibility. I'd love to be able to run this in Basilisk and have it accept incoming telnet connections but can't wrap my head around how to get that done. I guess I'd need a virtual serial modem in the host OS or something?
