DynaMac SE/30

Well since Hap and I have gotten this collection from Marion Stokes I just had to post the find of the DynaMac with SE/30 logic board in it.. It also has a Dove modem in it... I am assuming the Dove modem and extra monitor port board is a strange type of Nubus board created for this unit.. At any rate they must have upgraded it to a SE/30 logic board because these units usually had a Plus or SE logic board.. Never heard of one with an SE/30 board.. And also it is 32bit capable!!! Crazy!!! It's soooo cool! We also have another one and I haven't looked at that one yet it is in the original box. That one may be the one with the Plus logic board. Amazing this thing still works with the caps on the SE/30 logic board.. Most of her stuff so far when I have had to recap the portables are VERY clean.. not much leaking at all... Enjoy the pics!

Uni not sure what type of screen it is.. Is there anyway I could easily check?? I think it's so cool that this is the predecessor to the mac portable... No battery or mouse but pretty cool.. it has a handle just like the portable and it swings back so you can use it as a stand in the back. There is a sticker that says "Dove Enhanced" which is the modem.. it has an "FCC" label on the bottom for the modem communications.. Want to get it apart eventually but it appears it won't be easy.. so I haven't screwed with it.. I think the display needs to be removed to pull the top cover off.. There are only screws in the back for the top part. The caps on the SE/30 board will need to be done.. Also I'd like to boost up the RAM.. :) And I am wondering what ROM chip they used to get it 32 bit clean.. Perhaps the one from the IIcx.. or perhaps it's something they made??? Who knows... :)

Good question? But is it really? I wonder by what it means to be 32-bit "capable". Since the machine has 8MB of RAM, it hard to say if it means its just capable or means it is running as 32-bit. The machine identifier would tell TechTool if its capable or not.

Guess the best method is to query the ROMs to see what is in there or install more RAM to see if its properly addresses and not simply "consumed" by the System software. I know my Outbound, another pre-Portaable, is pretty crippled compared to yours. Think I am stuck with Plus ROMS and more limitations on RAM - not that I would dare upgrade mine.

Pedant corner: it's a Dynamac, not a DynaMac (which was a Japanese language Mac 512K marketed by Canon).

Two screens were used, as well as a variety of logic boards. The gas plasma models are 512 x 342 and have the magnesium case. This family later became retrospectively called the Dynamac GP. The other screen was a 640 x 400 resolution electroluminescent and became the Dynamac EL in a plastic case.

The SE/30 video card is a "special" -- definitely one we want to know more about. Please can you try hooking it up to a multisync colour display to see the available options. Make sure that you have a copy of the associated support software for obvious reasons.

There are a few other unusual goodies from Dynamac Computer Products: LCDisplay (640 x 480 monitor for the LC), LCPortable (three hour power pack for an LC), LCDevice (a 68030 accelerator aka LCPower?) and IIsf/IIsf30 (Starfighter, repackaged LC portables).

NIGHT STALKER
A stock SE/30 MoBo is 32bit Capable and runs in 32bit mode with Mode32 installed, correct? IIRC, Connectix had that hack patented and on the market for the Mac_II long before the release of the SE/30. It was a stand-alone commercial product before Apple was class-actioned into the ransom deal with Connectix to release Mode32 as freeware.

The Dynamac probably pre-dates the IIci's 32bit Clean ROM. Have you got a build date on that BEAUTIFUL lil' thang? :?:

p.s. Close-up Pics of that PDS Video Card would be MUCH appreciated!

I will try to answer all of your questions as soon as I can.. :) Hap and I are busy busy... so much stuff to go thru!!! For an SE/30 I understand that you have to have Mode32 to go above 8MB.. In most SE/30's I run TattleTech or MacTest Pro it will say NO for 32 bit even if there is just 8MB in there.. Here is another pic with MacTest pro. Perhaps someone can figure out the ROM version.. And yes I have backed up the hard drive just in case it goes kaputz! So I have all the original system files etc. I have not run Tattletech on it which I can find out more details.. I'll try to post asap.. :)

Ya, I would not let that one go. Not so much for value, but for its uniqueness and rarity.

That is an EL display made by planar. Those are nice displays, and they fetch BIG bucks on ebay as they are used in the industrial environment.

Does anyone happen to know how to take this thing apart??? I have to recap the SE/30 logic board.. It has no sound and it just in general needs a recap. I don't want to break it so I am trying to find take apart or at least find someone who knows.. It appears you take the screws off the back and then take the display off with two screws in order to pull the top cover off... I don't want to mess with the display and the cable.. I'm sure you can't find replacements out there!!! It's an awful take apart design if you do have to remove this display to get inside at all... Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks!
