Driver's License!

Yup, and too bad I am 23 before I got it.

Anyways, I have been talking about the VW Beetle that I got and have been restoring. Well, I am happy to announce that I took the Driver's license course and now am legally able to drive on my own. I just need to get insurance (which is going to cost a bit...), but once that is cleared, I can drive the beetle ANYWHERE I want to go :D

The guy that did the test with me used to restore beetles (about 40) and paid off his house when he got done restoring all of them. He said it was the first time he actually sat through the driver's license test with a car like that :p

Anyways, I just need to find an insurance carrier, and then I can go wherever I want.

I know it's probably a little late for getting it, but it feels much better not having to hitch rides, or ask someone to take me someplace, because not only can I do it myself, but I can also do it in style!!!

Good luck on the insurance! I remember when I first had my license (at 19) the best price for insurance I could get was over $600 for six months coverage. Nationwide wanted $900 for similar coverage. This was with a 14 year old car at the time.

Like you I bought a car before acquiring my license. Unlike yours it lasted 1 month before dying. [:(!] !]'>

If I recall correctly, they factor age into the equation too. So being 23 will probably help coius, Then again, I never had to deal with that sort of thing because I decided not to drive (and not to get a drivers license) at a somewhat early age.

And my parents didn't give me lifts either.

Then again, maybe my parent's insistence that they won't be my chauffeur helped out in my decision to not get a license. It helped me to figure out other ways to get around.

Well done. :) Took me 3 attempts to pass mine, but the last time I got a perfect score - didn't kill anyone at all that time! I was recently looking up comprehensive insurance for a $2,000 schittebawques and the quote was $1,500 a year plus a $500 excess. Luckeeeee I'm not with AAMI.

If I had a classic beetle, I would want to fix it up lowrider "bomb" style. Like this.

...except the beetle version of that. With the panels over the rear wheel wells (I don't know what they're called)... and the visor and whatnot. But classy, not cheesy or anything.

Oomg that would be rad. [|)] ]'>

Yeah no kidding. That's about what I'm paying on a 7 year old car at the age of 18. Though I hear my rates are supposed to drop since I'm a full time student now...

Driving that would be horrible. The panels look good, but the low-rider-ness just looks like crap, and I imagine going over things like speedbumps and potholes wouldn't be fun.

Ok, well the price went up, because we didn't realize that when we got the quote from geico that it only had like 50k insurance. I ended up going to Farmer's Insurance after I compared a rate of $500k insurance (more appropriate and willing to pay extra coverage) and it came out to $100 more than the geico one of the $50 coverage

Geico wanted about $75 more than the $500k coverage of Farmer's and only gives you $250k

So this is what it is (with the * as the decision)

so it's Geico $50k coverage:

$293 every 6 months

Farmers' $500k coverage*

$400 every 6 months

Geico $250k coverage

$475

Obviously I am going for farmers.

Especially since it has the best coverage and is cheaper.

My mom and dad have farmers which allows me to get a cheaper coverage too (about 35% off) which is nice.

It also helps that farmer's gives you a discount of one of you parents served in the military (my dad was in the vietnam war)

500k is a lot of coverage. I think I just carry the minimum liability although I do pay a little bit extra for "Uninsured Driver Coverage", which means I'm protected if some crapbag without insurance hits me, or if I am a victim of a hit and run, etc.

I believe most of those rely on airbag suspension, with which you can alter the ride height quickly with the push of a button.

Clarification request.

In the UK, we have three major insurance classifications for cars: third party only -- third party, fire and theft -- comprehensive. The first two are self explanatory, the third means that the insurance company pays up when you prang your car. All three provide unlimited third party insurance (ie if you cause an accident that permanently disables somebody, the insurance company will provide unlimited compensation to the victim according to need). Third party only insurance is mandatory, unless you know how to self insure by registering a government bond.

Congrats on getting your new licence! I'm in the process of getting mine, unfortunately I failed my driving exam (a stupid thing with a dividing line) and now, only on Sep 23rd I'll take a new one. :p

I know how you feel about being dependent of rides and public transportation, that's why I really need the licence. ;)
