My understanding is that A/UX is very specific about the hardware it will run on. To my knowledge, no PowerBook was ever supported.

That said, you may have some luck getting older Debian versions working. https://wiki.debian.org/M68k/Installing

Unfortunately, if you install Debian on it, it's just another Linux laptop. Honestly, I'm usually a zealous fanatic about open source and Linux, but for older Macs, the Mac OS is really the best option imo.

yeah, why are they actually so rare..was their production cancelled after the battery bomb cases

The battery fires get way overblown, it was around 3 batteries in pre-production. Never made it to consumers.
