AppleCD versions and differences

I can't find that much info about the AppleCD devices. When did Apple release them? What's the differences between the models?

I know AppleCD SC was introduced in 1989, but what's the difference between 150, 300, 300e, 300 plus, 600i and 600e plus? (Are there more models?)

PPC G4 "Graphite" was the first Mac to ship with a internal SuperDrive (CDRW), but didn't a external CDRW drive exist before Apple labeled it as a SuperDrive?

What about the 68k's? Did anyone sell a compatible CDRW at the time Apple sold 68k's?

If Apple didn't ship any 50pin SCSI CDRW's in the 90's, then who did?

My Philips OmniWriter is from 1997-1998, whenever the price point came down to my magic $399.00 trip-wire. Before the OmniWriter, a refurb PowerCD was my only optical drive.

With an intro date of 1997, that places CD-RW firmly into the 603e/604e/G3 transitional era.

As far as I know, the difference is the speed. A CD/SC is a caddy-load 1x drive the same as a CD100. CD300/CD300i are a tray-load 2x drive. CD600 and CD600i are a tray-load 4x drive.

The "SuperDrive" was a DVD-R(AM) drive. Apple didn't ship an Apple-branded CD-RW drive until the PowerMac G4 Cube and PowerMac G4 Digital Audio.

What about the 68k's? Did anyone sell a compatible CDRW at the time Apple sold 68k's? If Apple didn't ship any 50pin SCSI CDRW's in the 90's, then who did?

There were several different, third-party, external SCSI CD-RWs available. I have a Yamaha branded one.

Here is what I know about the models:

AppleCD SC - Original Caddy Load model. Can only handle 650MB disks

AppleCD SC Plus - Updated original Caddy Load. Can handle 700MB disks and has a fan to keep it cool.

AppleCD 150 - Not sure of this model.

AppleCD 300 - 2x External Caddy load model.

AppleCD 300 Plus - Not sure of this model.

AppleCD 300i - 2x Internal Tray load model.

AppleCD 300e - 2x External Tray load model.

AppleCD 600i - 4x Internal Tray load model.

AppleCD 600e - 4x External Tray load model.

I thought there was an 8x or 12x Apple External Model as well. Can anyone confirm that or anything that I am missing above?

I have a Yamaha, as well, but it's annoying to use. It only works if you have the Adaptec CD extension installed, and you can't boot from it.

Hey while this is up here;

I am having a HELL of a time getting either of two internal SCSI CD-ROMs to work on my 7100/80 running 8.5.1

Both a 600i and an OEM CD Drive fail to load cd's either at startup or when booted. I installed CD Rom Toolkit and even with that driverset the computer freezes or gives an adress error when a disk is inserted OR just plain doesn't mount or read the CD. The cds are varied formats; burnt, factory pressed, old Apple support CD's etc.

There is no 4-pin audio cable going from the CD drive to the logic board, is this my problem?

Sounds to me like a SCSI issue. The audio cable should not cause freezing or prevent it from booting disks...although I don't remember there ever being an audio cable on SCSI optical drives.

Check to make sure the internal SCSI chain is terminated properly and the SCSI is not the same as the internal HD(s) or attached external SCSI devices (to be safe).
