68040 Insertion Force

Just replaced my LC040 with a proper 68040 and, good grief, getting the 040 back in the socket was  really difficult. Is it supposed to be that hard to set the CPU back in the socket? It's also not 100% flush with the socket (it's about half the thickness of a credit card between the bottom of the ceramic and the top of the socket), but it runs - is this normal, or should I try to get it the rest of the way in and flatten the ceramic against the socket? I just don't want to break either the CPU or the board. :(

You could just wait and try seating it further when the chip and socket had warmed up a bit. Don't over do it so as not to crack the chip carrier. Or you could just use it and if it acts up later then try to seat it further.

It it works, leave it well alone.

In my experience, no it shouldn't take that much force. If a bunch of pins are misaligned and causing friction, perhaps.

Sometimes they have a slight gap between the socket and ceramic but it really depends on the machine and what socket they installed from factory. But it should definitely be level unless you're unlucky and got a "Friday night job".

I think you’re more than likely fine.  I just swapped processors in my Quadra 605, and at least on its socket there are tiny little standoffs molded into the plastic top that look about half the thickness of a credit card that keep the processor from being entirely flush. Probably there to give a little crack for removal tools to grab on/under the CPU.
