Quick update....

I installed the analog board, the LC 575 logic board, stuck my apple CD of 8.1 in the CD drive and turned the switch on.

Yes!  Just finished with my allinement tools - the picture looks great!

About to format my 16GB CF card in my SCSI2CF adaptor, then install the OS.

I will report back.

Everything seems to be working just fine!  My screen is outstanding.  I am set up for 640 X 480.  I have installed 8.1.  I just installed my network card and software.  I set the date and time and rebooted.  I could not be more happy!  I am looking forward to tomorrow when I can browse the web and set up FTP.

Except for that wiring mistake I caught it before I installed the analog board, all went smoothly.

I will post some screen shots as soon as I can.  I have some games in 640 X 480 I hope to install.  I really want to see what they look like on this screen.  I could not ask for better color or sharpness.

I could not have done this with out everyone's suggestions and help.

Thanks!

More tomorrow.

I have a Color Classic that I'm still debating whether or not I should mod. Can you take pictures of your screen?

kerobaros....  Yes, I hope to be posting some photos of my screen today.

I have not changed the font or font size and it is much more readable than I thought it would be. It is not a problem at all to read text or look at menus and options.   I am quite surprised.

This is probably the best place for "one stop shopping" for Color Classic info and mods:

http://www.powercc.org/

If you want to install a LC 575 logic board (no mods needed to this board), and to do the VGA upgrade to 640 X 480 (done to the analog board), check out the links from the above page here:

http://www.powercc.org/mystic/

and here:

http://www.powercc.org/640x480/

(I used option 1 on the above page)

I believe the native language of the author is not english, but the directions are very clear.  I believe what he is saying about  the VGA mod (option # 1) is that the original voltage was 60V, and after the mod, the voltage goes up to 64V.  The old time "High Rez Mod" would raise the voltage to 80V - Not good!

Photos to follow.  If I can do this mod, I know you can.

Here are some screen shots.  The photos are from my cell phone.  The file size was quite large so I reduced them.  They are not quite as clear as the originals.  The screen curve of the CRT is visible in the photos, but not seen when I look at the screen with my eyes.  Not sure why that is.  It might be the angle i took the pictures from.  The screen color and resolution are much better then the pictures I have posted here.

The font size seems fine to me. You are looking at 640 X 480.  I hope to install some software today. More photosd to follow.

I have a full 68040 to drop in.  But still looking at the best way to pull the CPU.  Also I have a big memory stick to install.

I have a small heat sync to install and need to find some power for it.  It is for the CPU....

Here is the hump I cant seem to get over.

Then what? Once you get all of this done and everything works good (I get it, doing it is awesome and you get a buzz). But once its done, the buzz wears off because I cant figure out what to do next. Cant really browse the web, I played the games I like over and over again now that I am sick of it.

Hmm...

The only thing right now keeping me going is the fact I use them for word processing writing manuals. Thats about it.

@techknight: Everything wears off with time, I agree with you. Once all the missing bits to my collection will be added, I know I'll feel the same way. It's hard to keep a good balance between buying and not buying. I think I'll start a "Mac Rescue" program (buy sad looking Macs, restore them and find them a nice home afterwards) once I'm bored with the ones I currently have.

@mraroid: Even though they're definitely not meant to be removed that way, I found that a flat blade screwdriver works well enough. At least that's what I used to remove the socketed 16Mhz 030 off my SE/30's LB... Be very gentle and try to lift the chip evenly, one small step at a time. Don't pry it too much. It's a slow process. It took me like 10 minutes to remove the 030 and it's still working.

I wanted to run several OSs on my Color Classic, but my stupid SCSI2CF adapter will only allow me to boot to one partition.
There's something I completely overlooked. "Startup Disk" allows you to select the partition you wish to start up from next time the Mac boots. It's located inside the control panels folder. I've used it multiple times before and I don't know why I didn't think of that before. It should work as long as the CF cards supports adding more than one partition to it.

I hear 'ya techknight....

My guess is that the Color Classic is just like the older Macs that came before it.  Folks like us enjoy learning 25 year old software.  We like replacing capacitors (well, we like building a solid machine).  We like squeezing a few extra clock ticks out of our hardware.

I never played games on my computers.  When I first installed an OS, I would delete all the games.  But now in my old age I want to see what all the fuss was about 25 years ago. I keep hearing about Myst.  Now I want to install it and see what it looks like.  And what is that other game I keep hearing about SIM City?

When I built gaming computers for kids, I would over clock everything and cool everything down.   So I enjoy swapping out SCSI hard drives for SCSI2CF or SCSI2SD cards in my older Macs.  I don't pretend to have the electronic background that you have.  But I would guess that the SCSI2SD cards draw less current from the power supply and also produce less heat.  That has to be good for a 25 year old computer.  I personally *HATE* mechanical hard drives in laptops.  It is just like sticking a 100 F heater in a small box.  When ever I repair laptops for my friends I always swap out the mechanical hard drive for a SSD regardless of whether they like it or not.  No complainants so far....

I have some upgrades to do yet on this Color Classic (upgrade my CPU, add more memory, install a CPU fan).  It will be fun and I am looking forward to it.

The one thing I really want to do with my Color Classic is read and send my email.  But it looks to be beyond me.  Maybe 8.1 will give me a better shot at this - I dono.  When I was running 7.6.1, I installed some old FTP software on the Color Classic and then some modern FTP software on my Windows 10 box.  I would down load files for my Color Classic onto my Windows 10 box.  Then I would FTP them over to the Color Classic.  I loved it!  Maybe I can find a way to get gmail to work using FTP.  Not sure.

The biggest problem about playing with old computers for me is that my girlfriend wants me to stop and spend time with her.

She has a good point.

Bad....

I did notice the "start up" control panel.  So I formatted my 16GB CF card into 8 partitions.  I loaded 7.6 into partition # 1.  Then I tried to load a different OS onto partition # 2.  All went well.  But when I selected disk # 2 from the Start up control panel, I would always boot to partition (disk) #1.  I thought I was doing something wrong.  So I spent days re formatting my CF card and trying all kinds of stuff.  I finally figured out, I can't do it with the SCSI2CF adapter I have.

I read this:

https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/topic/26188-new-batch-of-scsi2sd-adapters-and-microsd-bundles-in-stock-and-ready-to-ship-from-usa/page-8?hl=mraroid

(start reading around page 8, and start with my post)

It seems that my SCSI2CF card will not let me do what I want.  I can make partitions, but it appears that I can only boot to the 1st partition.

If I am wrong I would like to know what I am screwing up.  I have probably spent a week trying (with three different formatting tools).

I posted a few photos of my screen at 640 X 480 (more to follow).  I pulled up some text screens.

Can you 56 year old eyes read the text OK?  Or is it bad for you?

I have been playing around with it for a while, and I can hardly see any difference.  I want to import a photograph into the Color Classic and see what it looks like.

I just did some hardware upgrades.  All went well.

I pulled the XC68LC040RC33B and plugged in a full 68040.  It is running at 33Mhz.

I also installed a 128Mb memory SIM.  I booted the computer and went to Apple System Profile. It recognizes all of my memory (it says I now have 132MBs installed) and shows my new CPU.

It takes longer to boot.  I had 33MB of memory when I started.  I guess it will do a memory check when ever I boot the machine....

Thanks Bad for the CPU pull info.  I did what you did.  I used a small screwdriver and worked my way around the CPU and slowly pulled it up.  When it was raised up a bit I put my hand on it and it it pulled right out.

Mraroid - Greets to your success ;) Sound really cool what you realized :)

About your problem with the 16GB CF Drive... What kind of filesystem do you use on the partitions? What tool do you use to partition?

Did you try the Apple HD SC Setup Tool as the patched version to accept non apple drives? You can find it on http://powercc.org/downloads

olwille....

Thank you for your post.

I was going to use Lido to partition my CF card. The 16GB CF card (SanDisk Extreme PRO) had been used in the past and I had 7.6.1 installed on it.  I had used Lido to partition it.  I know that 8.1 can take larger partitions, so I was going to use Lido again to make 3 partitions. When I used Lido in the past to partition it, I made many partitions that were around 3GBs large. So I wanted to change that.

But before I did that, I was looking at the utilities in the 8.1 CD.  I decided to try Drive Setup.  It had never worked before for me in the past (with my CF cards).  But this time it worked.  I was surprised.  So I divided my CF card into three partition, each about 5GBs large.  The install of 8.1 went well with no errors.  I rebooted and everything worked.

I can't remember what kind of file system I used.  I used the default mac file system that Drive setup presented to me.  I think 8.1 can use something a bit different- maybe faster and better, but that is not what I used.

I have one big surprise.  After playing around for a few days with 8.1, I decided to see what would happen if I tried to install 7.6 on one of my two free partitions.  It never worked in the past.  I stuck in my 7.6 apple branded CD in my CD drive and installed 7.6 are partition # 2.  Then i went to control panel, and "startup disk" and selected partition # 2.  To my great surprise, my Color Classic booted to drive #2 and I was looking at a nice clean install of 7.6!!!

My big issue with my SCSI2CF adapter was that I thought (I was so wrong) that it would not do this.  And in the past, (before 8.1) it never would boot to another partition.  I used Lido to make three or four partitions and then install 7.6 on two partitions and try to boot back and forth between them.  It never worked.  It may be that Drive Setup offered in the 8.1 CD fixed this issue.  I really do not know.

Also surprising is that I did not need to down load and install any System enabler to make 7.6 work.  It just worked.  Why is that???

What I would really like to do is install 7.1 on my third partition.  But it is just under 5GBs large.  And I think 7.1 will not install on a partition that big. (???)

Do you know of any software that I can use to divide that partition (on the fly) into a smaller size so it will take a install of 7.1?  I do not want to re do what I have been doing for the past 3 days.  After the OS is installed, I have a ton of other software to install and configure.  I just got my web browser installed and working and it took a lot of work.

From your tag line it looks like you have some mighty fine custom Color Classics!  What are you using for hard drives and which OSs are you running?

Bad....

I gave you some wrong information.  In the past (before 8.1) I was never able to use "Startup Disk" to boot to another partition.  The OS I was using was 7.6 and 7.6.1.

But this morning, after the install of 8.1, I tried yet again to install 7.6 on one of my two empty partitions.  The install went perfect.  After the install, I went to "startup disk" (in 8.1) and selected drive # 2 and rebooted.

It worked!!!  I thought the issue was with my SCSI2CF adapter, but I was wrong.  Not sure why it is working now......
