Can't we use AppleTalk over IR for wireless comms with lasers?
Well, NASA recently used lasers to transmit a video over about 19 million miles, and the latency was only a bit under 2 minutes, so it should be possible, and latency for a few thousand miles should be relatively trivial.

IR requires a direct line-of-sight, though, so one would need many relays to make it across the Atlantic.

However, don't fiber optic cables operate on this principle already?

Also, there used to be a new Bolo tracker server up, but not enough people played. :(

Your wording makes it sound as if the server is no longer around. The Bolo tracker (and NAT traversal proxy) is up and running as always. (If it's not working for some reason, please message me, because I want to know about that.) People can play any time they want. I'm never going to shut it down just due to lack of players. http://bolo.astrospark.com

user@debian:~$ nc bolo.astrospark.com 50000 | tr '\r' '\n'
