630 in 52xx

theres still a good chance it could have been because of hardware fault in his specific hardware - especially since we are talking about stuff that was cheaply made 20 years ago

Who knows.  Guess we'll know more when someone else gives it a shot ... hint hint.

Thanks to uni, we know:

• it boots
• it displays on the internal monitor
• SCSI works
• ADB works
• nothing exploded

Nope no fault in anything i did...Or my drives...   its ok to have wishful thinking though...  ( 630 in a 5200 ) your IDE is still going to be dead... unless you get knee deep into the nitty gritty of the pinouts and the IDE chips of the MB's and where all the lines go to of the edge connector... i am sure someone can figure it out... but for right now its not going to be me.. as right now, its go time for my customers.

and yea as bunsen said, i found that it works 100% except for the IDE.

and i would assume it would work even better with a 5200 as you will have some higher resolutions available to you over the 640x480!

Well, before things get that drastic, I would* sure try some different disk software first.

*if I was doing this myself, which I'm not ... yet

yes it was... had Mac OS 8.6 on the 40 gig ide.    So i tried that hd, and the original 500mb ide from the 630. both good.

Then nuked the 40gig, in the q630, set up 8 partitions wasted the rest,  put 8.1 on there from the zip.  and it booted up great in the q630.

but not in the 5260.

i can understand where the op is coming from... i hate to say this i wish i had another 5200 so i could try it just to ease things....  but i only have the one 5260, its been in the shed for 3 years...

i wasnt saying that there was a fault in what u did uniserver. i am in your debt for checking this out.. thank you.

i was just saying that there was stil a chance it was a problem specific to your actual units... ie: u are using a 5260 + not a 5200..

and as you said, u have had them in a shed for many years..

i also did say that i had some issues initializing media that i know works fine in other machines with my 5200CD without any modification..

the SD card + compact flash to ide converters that i tried in it.. work FINE 100% in other machines.. but DO NOT FORMAT when i put them into the 5200CD.... so the problem could be one thats specific to the  AIO case itself.. regardless of the motherboards connection to it...

no matter what i do i cannot get them to format the compact flash or SD cards i have... the only thing that worked for me was using a SATA drive with a sata2IDE converter... who knows why.. whether its a cable select vs master vs slave issue?? it might very well be. but like i said.. i had problems with the IDE in my 5200CD without even trying to modify it.. its a very old IDE interface (1995 is ancient for IDE... basically the same as a 386/486 ide channel.. which is what.. ATA-1? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_ATAit might even be PRE-ATA (see the chart on the page, ATA-1 was invented in 1994... given that the IDE channel can recognize my 80gb drive as 74gb drive.. it has to be ATA-1 at least.. )

so basically in summary.. what im trying to point out is.. another hard drive MAY initialize fine.. where that one that you tried did not.. you only tried one hard drive, correct? im pretty sure the drive has to be set to cable select aswell.. i remember reading something about that in the actual PERFORMA manual.  ok i just checked the pdf and cant find any settings re: slave vs master.. im not sure where i remember reading that now

This would work!, for pop on rear scsi....  i keep forgetting artmix did make something, bit of a hodge podge but could be a viable solution to our problem here... the only issue would be cost....

BakMonolith is designed for Stratos PowerMonster and able to convert 2.5 inc. SCSI interface to 25pin SCSI connecter directly. This card has the function of BUS Power mode so that it does not need external power supply

plus this

That's not what I said.

supernova777, your posts are really hard to read.  Would you mind putting a little effort into making them readable?  Paragraph breaks, full words, things like that?

bunsen can you try it? and don't break an ankle stepping over that pile of 630's, that it sounds like we all have, haha.   5 bucks says on the 5260 you have Mac os 8.6 on there as i did with mine... i mean,  i tried to give the PPC architecture everything it needed to become successful.

if you want , quadra 630's or powermac's 6100's or quadra 650's,    tedahodges@mac.com is the man... he has piles of these things to the ceiling , he's a great guy and prices are super reasonable!
