630 in 52xx

Did you actually read this thread? I am just curious.

This thread WAS about putting a quadra board in a 52/53XX machine. taking it down to a 68k, I remember when this thread started and I was watching it.

And I also forgot, thread necromancy!

52XX because there was a 5200, 5215, 5260, and maybe some others. Even a 5300 and 5400, and even a 5500.

i still havent downgraded the machine

its not a main machine or anything obviously so im not in a rush

i didnt know it was possible to do any of this originally

it was only through communicating on the forum + googling that i (With the help of others here) figured this all out

as a solution for me to have a color 68k mac that works with my IDE compact flash adapters i already own

im still using the machine as a 5200cd 75mhz ppc cpu now

its really alot more usable with os8.1 installed - system 7 was horrible on the machine!!!

i theorize that this would be the opposite once i swap out the mobo for a 68k powered one

then itll prob work faster in the system 7 over os8.1

the only reason i got this vintage mac was

a) i needed a mac with a floppy drive

B) i wanted a vintage mac capable of running system 7 because none of my other macs can

c) i wanted to test using early 90s audio apps with early 90s midi equipment so i wanted a early 90s mac

Still a cool project! Thanks for the update. I'm going to have to give this a try in my 6290 after I dig through the heap a bit more. Offhand, does anyone know if there was a system software jump between the Quadra level 630 requirements and its PPC RoadApple descendants?

I forget which DevNote it was in, but there's info on the partial implementation of the particular IDE/ATA spec. Apple mucked up in the 630 series. This has set me to wondering about the possibility of patching the firmware to move the IDE implementation off MoBo and onto the PDS. Since IDE (like almost everything else) is addressed as a SCSI device at system level, might something like a sub-set of SCSI2SD be implemented on the system bus of the TVtunerMac generation on a PDS card? Full IDE/ATA implementation on a 33MHz system bus its a pretty big I/O pipeline to swamp using one or two SSDs.

i still havent gone thru with this... lol

im just trying to test my Opcode 64XTC midi interface with my performa 5200CD and its giving me midi communication errors over the serial port

so i gues it really is a thing with the serial ports being unable to do proper midi communication on this particular mac...

obviously it was my crazy plan to downgrade to a 68k quadra 630 board in an attempt to get some serial ports that are more able to perform MIDI speeds of 1Mhz or whatever the speed is??

are there any Quadra 630 Owners here that have any type of MAC SERIAL MIDI Interfaces??? who might have experience using the Quadra 630 with MOTU Performer, or Passport Master Tracks Pro, or Opcode Vision, or Cubase / Logic etc

as far as IDE implemenation goes.. on the performa 5200CD i have had an 80GB Sata drive connected to the IDE interface (with a SATA/IDE interface board in between) and its working fine for the longest time..

i cant comment on the quadra 630 - i guess i should just buy the board and try the mod myself rather then posting on forums looking for insider info from other users
