What you you think, was this a good deal or what?

I was looking on craigslist today and saw a PM G5 2.3GHZ 2004 model and the guy wanted 225.00 B/C he said it was shutting down programs by itself, programs not the OS or the hardware..

I go over there and the unit was in good condition I offered him 200.00 he said he would throw in a AP extreme card then it would be 225.00, I said ok..

I get it home and clean it up, change the battery for the pram... then I noticed something rattling inside... I shake the G5 upside down and 2 of the pci slot screws fell out (the slots had no slot covers or screws...

He had different brand memory besides the 512mb that was original, so I took the non original memory and kept the 512mb in...

So I check everything out and made sure no other screws were inside the unit...

I am using it now.. and it seems fine and ran a dvd for 2 hrs and it seems fine...

What do you think for the price?

5 years ago, in 2004, I purchased a used blue & white G3 with 256 MB of RAM and a 20 GB hard disk with nothing but the standard OS 8.5 system install for a little over $200. That G3 is still in use to this very day, except with OS 10.4.x and the addition of an 80 GB hard drive.

Clearly, I got a good value. IMO, so did you.

If thats US$225, I think you paid a fair price for it. If you ask me, most PowerPC systems are massively overpriced these days, and I suspect that the values of most PowerPC systems will take a nosedive in the coming months.

yes it was 225.00 USD... I been checking them out on ebay and some (like what I just bought today) go for 600.00 and up...

and they want 50.00 or 60.00 for shipping...

Yeah, here in Australia, they commonly go for $800 - $1200...I don't think i've ever seen a G5 go for less than AU$800, ridiculous, if you ask me.

Personally I think you paid a good, fair price for a 5 year old system that is no longer supported under the current Mac OS.

But just B/C they aren't supported doesn't mean they are no good...

I really was never into LAGS (Latest and Greatest Syndrome)... one can go broke doing that...

There are people running OS 9.2.2 and still being productive, getting emails and such...

It all depends what you are going to do with it. $225 for a G5 you intend to use (and is up to the challenge) as your main mac is a good price, but $225 for something to add to your collection that will see little use is not good since the prices are not near rock bottom yet.

I spent $400 or so back in 2000 for build up an 8500 with G3, 8MB video card, decent RAM, and IDE card for my main hobby mac. It was money well spent because it ran OS 9 well and lasted me untill a year or so ago when I got a B&W for free. If I had not used it I would have been better off waiting untill PCI macs were worthless and then get a loaded one for penuts. One day I want the last OS 9 booting G4 to finish my collection, but I can/will wait for them to be so obsolete that they are worthless before I do.

People need to decide what they want to actually use as their main rig and what they want to collect to determine what is a good deal.

I'll be running Adobe CS 4 with my main machine my 2.0 dual core G5..

it's not for a collection but to be used..

I know I have to up the memory but there's no rush...

The G5's are more than enough to run Adobe CD 4 and other stuff I have... for awhile...

The G4s already have taken a dive. $150 locally got you a MDD 1.0ghz...that was up for a long time.

You have to remember that the G4's are a little older than the G5's and the G5's are a little older than the MacPro...

But in the end it's up to the person who uses it nd what they use it for...

I personally love the G5, now I have 2 (check my sig).

And they will be used...

with the economy the way it is and being unemployed and a person who doesn't get into the LAGS syndrome to me the G5 is great...

Thanks... It runs very good.... the previous owner never did any maint on it and then finding 2 screws in it floating around tells me that someone tried to do something... but they are out now and it's been running all day running bionic, that's pretty cpu intensive...

$225 is the cheapest I've heard of for a G5. Around here they go for $650 up (some guy was asking $2000 on Craigslist - good luck!). Except for the water coolers, they are built like tanks and very reliable. I think you got a deal!

I think you got a good deal on the machine.

I'd pay $225 for the machine. Although I would more than likely offer only $200 as I wouldn't need the AP card since the only things in my house that are wireless are my laptops and iPod Touch. Everything else connects via CAT5 the way God intended.

What I did with the AP was to post it on ebay... Some one bought it for 30.00 bux... so in actuality I paid 195.00 for the G5...
